Shake, Rattle and Roll

Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
To people who live in Seismic areas, this will seem like nothing, however, i live on an Island off the coast of Maine, a state where we get maybe 1 earthquake a year over 1.0.

In the past 11 days, we have had 4 measurable earthquakes, and about 60 fore/aftershocks

11 days ago we had a 3.4
4 days ago we had a 1.8 aftershock, 5 minutes later a 2.5
last night we had a 3.9

the 3.9 was orignally reported as a 4.2, and it sure felt a lot stronger than the 3.4 from last week, this one actually knocked things off shelves and caused a couple rockslides in the park.

Hum. So is it a sign or more to come, or just a freak act of nature, like where you get 3 plane crashes in a week then none for six months?

Nobody seems to know.

all i know, is that if a big one comes, and like the island sinks into the sea, I really hope its ona day when there are a couple cruise ships in port..

Seems there are Earthquakes showing up in unexpected places... maybe there's a slow moving pressure wave and plume pushing up the North American plate...

Speaking of sesmic events, my mother-in-law is all worried about Yellowstone blowing, trying to get us to stock up on food. Of course if Yellowstone were to blow in such a way that someone in Missouri needs to stock up on food, I think we'd need more than a week or two...

If Yellowstone goes up in that way...

People in a 600 mile radius will be more worried about the immediate need to be able to breath...

:p
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
Bah, breathing is overrated anyway.

Thankfully, I live in a part of the country that never sees earthquakes.

That's what i thought
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
So they've now upgraded our earthquake to a 4.2, and the official USGS water monitoring station has noted a 2+ foot drop in the water level in their monitor well, 2 feet and dropping further.
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
So its still dropping, even after the earthquake?

A big hole is opening and evil will spring forth!

Don't be suprised if steam vents start popping up and you get phreatic eruptions...

[COMIC STORE GUY]Dante's Peak: Worst Volcano Movie Ever[/COMIC STORE GUY]

Jake
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
I'd have to dissagree and say that Volacno is the worst volcano movie ever, even if i did enjoy it.
• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
yeah Dante's Peak was at least a lot more accurate to real life than Volcano was...

... if not in the USGS scientist all-knowing and predicting part... :p
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
Oh please, that wasn't supposed to accurately represent the USGS, that was all Pierce Brosnan, didn't you know? he's the greatest seismologist, actor, chef, secret agent, nanny, somalier, teacher, police officer, criminal, nuclear scientist, ancient greek god...

Pierce is so great, that when he jumps in the ocean, he doesn't get wet. the water gets Pierce.
• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
perhaps you didn't read my message accurately or you were just messing with me...

My comparison was between DP and Volcano... Not anything about the USGS nerd club portrayed in the movie.

More importantly the look and feel of the volcano in the former movie...

;)
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
Yes, i was messing with you,

I rather enjoy both movies, but DP was a better movie, Volcano was just a fun Disaster Flick.

Sometimes for a disasster flick, you really have to just sit back and say "Ok, i know this could never really happen, the science is suspect, and the actions taken by the characters is insane, but hell, its a lot of fun to watch them do it"
