I honestly think it is a good idea. If these shows were being made today they would have used this kind of tech. Also the effects themselves are pretty damn dated and with a whole generation used to seeing awesome sci-fi effects done on tv each week, seeing the cheesy effects of this show actually HURT new viewers coming to watch it. The story of the show is the most important part. the message. NOT the effects people.
Also I feel B5 could use a facelift. Some of those textures are pretty damn dated.

So you rather have everything re-acted and re-written =Þ

I would say that would lead to a very different show, but it wasn't that long since TNG abandoned the miniskirts that Voyager and Enterprise went even further.
I was saying that it isn't a big deal to have the effects re-done. We're already fan's we don't care if they look crappy but a whole bunch of people who are not yet fans do.
If you like the original series the way it originally aired, then you can have all of the episodes now on DVD.
You really have nothing to complain about.

If they stop making the originals available (at a reasonable price, i.e. the same or less, and not some stupid "Classic edition!" price), then we really will have something to complain about. Frankly I think that's unlikely as it means less potential for getting money from fans (they can only buy one version, not two). But as said before, these are studio execs. Studio execs are not known for doing what we think is logical or sensible.
The whole thing reminds me of a line from Ian Malcolm in the book of Jurassic Park, i'll paraphrase since i can't remember the EXACT quote but it goes something like "The spend so much time wondering if they can do it, they dont think about if they SHOULD do it"
thats how i feel about this, sure its a "neat" idea, but its not needed IMHO. I dont see the need to Tinker with something.
i thought they were gonna change it way more then they did. All they did was take the same exact SFX shot and rendered it in 3D. I thought they were gonna use new angles and stuff.
There were about four all-new shots. The opening flyby that where the camera slid past the bridge, a shot from above of the Romulan Bird of Prey, a shot of the Enterprise close in on the saucer, and a closeup of the Enterprise firing phasers.
But, jeeze, those syndication cuts are murder. I think that's far more worth complaining about. Luckily, the full versions of the episodes are being restored, so the inevitable DVDs (and, hopefully, generous stations airing it) will have the uncut 51 minute version.

RubberEagleWhat's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
You also have to remember, ACTA was Chen's first what-so-ever-score.
you could really see.. erm hear.. him learning and getting better over the course of crusade.

Chen's score in crusade is often very good, but in ACTA, its sometimes works to much against the pictures (my biggest problem is when we first arrive at B5 (or any time there after), i would wish there was a short variation of the B5 theme. It's like a majestic introduction shot of the enterprise without the Courage Fanfare, or a version of the Star Trek Theme by Jerry Goldsmith playing...)
That certainly might have been a bit odd, but I had no apparent problems with it. I thought the nearly effects-level sounds worked perfectly fine with most of it.
Comments
However.
Given how they did Enterprise and how Lucas did Star Wars revised, I have to cringe at the prospect them completely ruining the shows.
The one thing I hope is that if they do this they still sell the Classic version of the DVDs.

Cool nevertheless.
