Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
So... 12 planets in the solar system... what do y'all think?

Proposal would increase planets from 9 to 12
'Big Bang' expansion would keep Pluto in the mix

    Plutons eh?

Geologists should start having a fit then...

That term is already used for batholithic entities...

    *sigh*

    For example:

i think the whole thing is silly, if Pluto as a Kuyper belt object, and is a planet... then every time we discover a new large Kuyper Belt Object, it has to become a planet, we're goign to have 200 flippin planets before long.

Right, this is a bandade to keep the public happy even though mst probably couldn't name all the planets (hell many in the US don't even know all the rights granted in the first amendment).

badastronomy.com has a ncie article on the whole shebang.

I reckon they should have made the definition so that we didn't have quite so many planets, but then made Pluto an honourary planet.
  • PSI-KILLERPSI-KILLER Needs help
Yeah i agree with Biggles , Pluto an honourary planet.

Do you know how many text books will have to get thrown into the fire.
  • croxiscroxis I am the walrus
They wouldn't be thrown into the fire. A lot of text books still have the soviet union in the map (although this was 6 years ago when I was still in HS).

If anything declassifying pluto as a planet is a golden opportunity to teach that as we learn new things we need to let go of our previous (mis)conceptions.

Amen to that, but some scientists refuse to admit they may have been wrong, Unike Stephen Hawking, who when he is proven wrong, admits it.

Saying "I was wrong" is probably the most difficult thing to say in the English language.

from Mostly Harmless by Douglas Adams
    Rupert
A planet in Earth's solar system beyond the orbit of Pluto. Rupert was named Persephone, but nicknamed Rupert after "some astronomer's parrot." It was eventually settled by the grebulons.
