I hate Routers, I hate Computers, I hate the internet

UGH,

So we've got this router, actually 2 routers, but one is backup. its a Twin Wan router, used it all last summer with no problems, but this year we have a new ISP,

the router just randomly disconnects and reboots, so i go back and forth with their tech support, letting them know whats going on, and they say they dont know why its doing it, but a solution might be to try some beta firmware. well this is a production envorionment so i am loathe to use beta firmware.

I finally get around to looking at the new beta firmware, which specifically stats "Fixed reboot issue when both PPPoE and DHCP are used" so they fricking KNEW this was an issue to begin with.

needless to say i went and tried the new firmware, and the fucking thing STILL randomly reboots, UGH.

I"m startign to think its some piece of hardware on our network, or some configuration in the router thats causeing it, but i'll be damned if i can figure it out, and sicne i've got a cafe full of people using the internet, ic an't really bring the network down to play with it,
UGH

I HATE EVERYTHING!

It pisses me off because its so random that i can't track down whats causing it. for example, the last 3 hours, ahve been fine, then all of a sudden, blammo, it reboots again.

It's possible a malformed packet is crashing it. I've seen that happen a couple of times, and RC gets it every time a certain image is loaded in his browser.

Yeah, anytime images from certain servers that are broadcasting malformed packets come in, my router/modem reboots. It's quite annoying, but easy to block: just block all images from that website's image server.

Every router I've had has had a problem of some kind. I hate networking. It's the plague of computers, it never works properly, never sets up smoothly, never works correctly, always mysteriously malfunctions.

Well i think i've ruled out our vonage adapters as causing the problm, it has to be one of the computers. they all shut off at midnight, the router as of 15 minutes ago, had been up and running for 9 hours, so about 11pm last night give or take, the computers shut off at midnight, it ran fine, and just rebooted again, 30 minutes or so after i turned on all the computers..

Now i just need to track down if its one of the windows machines, or one of the linux boxes...

the shitty part is, i really only have about 90 minutes a day to play with the network, unless i come in really early, and i have enough trouble getting myself up at 5 to be in at 6. i might schedule someone to come in and work for me one day this week, and then come in the night before and work all night on it. the problem there becomes, if i'm really tired working late.. i might miss something obvious.

of course the other way to do it, is to limp along as-is for the next 3 months until we close for the season, and work on it all winter...

I suppose it could be a bad switch... we do have an inordinate amount of switches here. something which i'm going to remedy this winter, we have 25 public computers, 8 employee computers (cashregisters, servers etc) and we have 14 switches spread about, thats too many,

Do you cycle your switches from time to time?

Over time as they store the Mac addresses of the various network identities they are routing packets for they can get "clogged" (for lack of a better term).

We had this problem at Sierra and had to shut them off and back on every few months to start up new fresh MAC tables in them.

Can't say this is your problem but it's one less trouble to deal with.

Thats not a bad idea, i dont reboot them manually, they do get reset from time to time when we lose power. although almost all of them are on ups's, that maintain their power...

i may give that a try, i did just get an email from the firmware development team from Xincom who makes the router. so hopefully i'll be able to get some help.

    i'm rather stumped.

I have had to update my router firmware 4 times since October 05. It did fix problems more and more.
