As I said in IRC, I wish I had neighbours technically competent enough to steal my wireless so I could try this. :) But who's going to try stealing my WPA-protected wireless when there are half a dozen completely open networks visible from my house alone?

Out of the 4 external networks available to my laptop (in the front corner of the house). There is only one that is using any form of encryption (WEp), the rest are just plain open. One has even used their last name as the network name...

well the last name is better than "default" or "linksys"

see, i'm a strong advocate of securing up your wireless network, i am also extremely opposed to theft of wireless. i dont care if the person is a total idiot and leaves it wide open, if you use it illegally, you are a thief, its no better than splicing into someones telephone or cable, and no, i dont buy the argument that because its broadcast, then its ok.

anyway, thats enough of a rant.. lol

    I'm a proponent of

    "If it's open, it's free"

I'm also a fan of securing a wireless network.

But if you're providing it wide open, then that tells me you don't mind sharing bandwidth.

I disagree, and even though its been done to death, i'll use the same flawed analogy that everyone else does...

If you leave your front door open, it does not give anyone the right to walk in and eat your food.

Is it asking for trouble? Yes, yes it is, but that doesnt mean its ok for someone to just walk in.

and at least here in the states, most municipalities agree, where i live, if you connect to a network, even one wide open, and get caught, be prepared for a fine. as it is considered Theft of Service, and the police are more than happy to come and give you a ticket (there have been several dozen issued since this issue became prevelent)

In the interest of full disclosure, I make my living selling wireless internet access. so people who like to steal wireless, literally are stealing food out of my kids mouths. Every person who comes into my town and steals wireless, takes a few bucks out of my pocket. so before anyone says "yeah its illegal but its a victimless crime...."

Guess i've just got a unique perspective on it, since it directly impacts my financial situation.

There are also people who intentionally leave the networks open, for whatever reason.

Even if they leave it wide open, unless their ssid is "USE ME PLEASE" or something stating its a free use network. it's a crime to use it without permission (at least in this state)

Well, I guess you all know there are those Joe Average Vegetables who don't know a damn about WLANs and basic securing. (or about anything when it comes to computers)
So how do you expect them to be able to tell the difference if laptop happens to pick automatically neighbours "publicly announced" WLAN instead of own?

I'd look at it more along the lines of using someone elses water to get a drink. No problem if you only use a little.

But if they use it to say, water their lawn...then we'd have issues because you sapping alot of it. (eg: Torrenting, downloading huge files, things like that)

this is why it drives me insane that wlan vendors still ship their boxes encryption disabled and a ssid of "Default" FORCE the customer to set those before they can use the box and we'd be all set.
