So.. Finally going to get myself a computer..

MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
Edit: Ive come to my senses regarding the laptop bit.. ;) See new configuration below..

Been to the Dell website, and they have a couple of summer offers that I like, but I want to ask you (like I did a year ago), what are your recommendations?

I want it to be small because my new home will be 18 sqmtrs. I want to be able to watch movies on it (also it will be connected to a flat tv preferrably >32"), surf the net, download music (oh the horror!) and play world of warcraft.

Thanks guys. :)

i dont really know much about laptops. i am tempted to get a notebook of some description for travelling...something with a reasonable memory and a dvd drive. of course, id need a job to get some money first :(

and you'll never convince me to get anything made by apple:D

World of Warcraft pretty much rules out mac minis. They have shitty onboard graphics. The higher end mac laptops are apparently very powerful, and thanks to bootcamp or whatever they call it, can dualboot with winxp (for the games, you see, which they play better than their plain x86 counterparts). However, they're also quite expensive.

I'd suggest you build yourself a nice Mini PC. AOpen G325 (700kr) is a decent looking case (though it needs a PSU, like Antec NeoHE 380W or Seasonic S12-380W @ 800kr, both manufactured by Seasonic) and a very shortly there will be Intel Core 2 Duo E6600's (3000kr), the best processor for nearly any task at a reasonable price level, and ATI RS600 (Radeon Xpress 1250) chipset based MicroATX mobos (1000-1500kr?), which also support HDCP (might come in handy when connected to a >32" flat tv)... X700 based integrated graphics solution should be enough for WoW?

And then you need a HDD like Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB SATA2 (1000kr), 2x 1GB DDR2-800 memory modules like Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400 (2400kr), a DVD drive (LiteOn SOHD-16P9S @ 250kr should do) or a burner (BenQ DW1650, LG GSA-H10A or NEC ND-4570 @ 400kr), a monitor like Samsung SyncMaster 205BW (3800kr) and a mouse - keyboard combination (Logitech UltraX Media Desktop @ 450kr maybe?).

So far the price has gone up to 13500kr with the 20" monitor (if you even need one because of the >32-incher?), is it too high? And what about the audio side of the equation; are you satisfied with your current speakers?

The question is if Eclecticonaut's proposal is portable enough. It won't be as small as a mini mac, but smaller than your avarage computer case.

notebooks these days are also quite able to play atleast World of Warcraft, like for 11000kr you'll get a Intel Pentium M processor 735(1.70 GHz), 1024 MB RAM minne, DVD-brännare och 128 MB ATI Mobility Radeon X700 grafikkort. Maskinen levereras med inbyggt trådlöst nätverkskort, 100 GB hårddisk. I'd bet there are cheaper notebooks out there with similar hardware.

I saw a macbook play WOW very nicely once. Wasn't the best it could look i think but still nice.

While not super portable the iMacs are damn powerful and small(ish) just throwing that out there.

beware though the sweet looking black macbook's are about 150 bucks more expensive for the black.

I got the impression that the guy wants a small media pc, probably one with a potential ability to play blu-ray/hd-dvd material. Pentium M just isn't powerful enough for that (believe me, I own one myself).

And when you want to store music and even mid-grade video, you'll need a lot more storage space than a mid-range laptop can nowadays hold.

I think he was copoying it from a site.. ;)

Anyway, this is what I am thinking of right now:

Dell Inspiron 6400 (evalue n07645)
Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2050 (1.60 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 533 MHz FSB)
Äkta Windows® XP Home Edition, SP2, svenskt språk
1024MB 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (2x512)
80GB (7,200 rpm) Hard Drive
15.4" W Screen XGA TFT Display resolution: 1280x800 with TrueLife™
8X DVD+/-RW med Software (DVD/CD-brännare och DVD/CD-uppspelning)

Actual cost is (since I am a student, and summer offers):

9 668,63 kr = 1,326.69 USD

Reasonable?

You can't get better graphics to that laptop than X1300, which means no deal.

Tell me, are you really going to travel with your new computer and use it constantly elsewhere?
• EclecticonautEclecticonaut Elite Ranger
If you really are going to do so, then Sony Vaio VGN-FE21S would be a good choice. Sadly, this model can't be found from Swedish shops, not even the Sony Center seems to know anything about it.

...or not, why can't they implement a simple DVI slot? Bad thinking... maybe an Acer or Asus then.

Forget the laptop, buy a monkey, they are much more portable.

althogh playing WOW on a monkey is prolly going to have crappy graphics

Actually, I was going to get the upgrade to the ATI® MobilityT RadeonT X1400 256MB HyperMemoryT graphics card, which should be more than enough to play wow, shouldnt it?

Edit: And why I want a portable is to use it at school, and to be able to put it in a clothbag on the wall, to save space (18 sqmtr apartment as I said..) ;)

Im also pretty sure I dont want to exceed the 10000 sek mark.

I wouldn't count on it. And furthermore, as you can see by rotating the picture of the device, there's no DVI there, which means poor picture quality on a big screen -> Dell is out of the question (if you don't desire the monstrous Inspiron 9400, which has DVI).

In this case, I believe you have no other choice. But it doesn't have to be a big leap, Acer Aspire 5652WLMi costs under 1200 euros. And if you buy it from Norsk-IT, you just might get a nordic keyboard layout.

Ok, Ive resigned myself to not buy a laptop. I set a pricelimit to 10.000 sek ($1,359.79), and since I couldnt get what I wanted in that range, Im moving on..

Now Im looking at barebones instead. Im trying to stick below 6000 sek ($815.809) this time..

This is what Im looking at right now:
Case: Asus Pundit PH3 (http://www.officeone.se/product.php?id=236544)
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 506 2,66ghz (http://www.webhallen.com/prod.php?id=44856)
GFX: Palit X1600pro 512mb (http://www.officeone.se/product.php?id=304590)
HDD: Samsung 250gb IDEspin P120 7200rpm 8mb Cache (http://www.webhallen.com/prod.php?id=45333)
Memory: Kingston 1024mb PC3200 CL3 (http://www.webhallen.com/prod.php?id=25048)
CPUfan: Thermaltake Silent CPU-Fan (http://www.webhallen.com/prod.php?id=52650)
DVD: Nec DVD±Rw 16x Duallayer Labelflash ND-3551 - black (http://www.webhallen.com/prod.php?id=51876)

at 5947 sek ($808.533)

or

replacing the Case:
Asus Pundit P3 – PH4 (http://www.jmedata.se/product.asp?itemno=28099)
and memory:
Kingston 1024mb PC5400 (http://www.jmedata.se/product.asp?itemno=27443)

at 6360 sek ($865.056)

Any immediate thoughts?

Edit: And I know I wont be able to play it at the highest graphics settings. The thing it, I dont even want to use it for anything other than watching movies and surfing the net, its just that i need wow.. :(

Oh, and without having researched a lot, this is what Im thinking of as a screen..

Your wrong my mini plays WOW just fine it can get a bit laggy with big instances. but Im running it on 512 and I have no problems whatsoever...PVP is smooth too even in the various battlegrounds. If I had upped it to a gig Id say it would be clean as a whistle. The graphics may not be as great as say someone with the same investment into say an equivalent PC. But size wise its perfect. I carry my lunchbox everywhere :indywink:

I looked up the case mobo combo(PUNDIT-PH3/ WO CD) it has a 275 watt power supply. That power may not be good if you plan to upgrade. But then again when DX10 comes out everything goes into the garbage can.

Small question why don't you like AMD? AMD's run cooler, quieter and faster than Intels. Until next generations come out.
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
Oh, I just have a general dislike of AMD, thats all. Had a few nasty run ins with AMD when I was younger, never had a problem with Intel though..

Edit: Oh, and I dont plan to upgrade. The only game I will play on the puter is wow, hopefully this will be enough for the expansion. I plan on using an Xbox360 for games.
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
AMD weren't so hot back before Athlons, but they've been great since then. You should definitely consider them.

Hooray for Core 2 Duo, AMD sliced their AMD Athlon 64 prices with about 50%. :D

You're going to have a serious heat problem with that processor in that Pundit case (because it's just way too small for the infernal Pentium D), wouldn't recommend that at all.

I'm assuming you won't need a monitor, so what's wrong in my original recommendation (besides the fact that those mobos can't be found anywhere until the end of August)?

Btw, 512MB of video RAM on a graphics card slower than 7800GT is a complete waste of money.

Ok, thanks, thats good to know. :)

The problem with your original idea is that it wieghs in at approxomately double the amount of money I want to pay for a non-laptop device. I do like the case, though Id rather have a higher/thinner so it takes up less space on my desk.

I will have to think about it some more.. Thanks man.
