b5 mk2 possibilities with DX9 cards(or better)

Well, recently i took the plunge and got myself a nice ATI 9700 and to be quite honest,it flat out rocks in both features and performance....It card just basically plays any game out there at 1600*1200 32bit with 16x aniso filtering and even in some cases, with 2x anti-aliasing while still hitting 60 fps on average...Just awesome performance... I can't even imagine what cards released within the next 24 months will be capable of if GPU makers keep going at it at the current pace...

But this thread isn't about the 9700 anyways...It has mostly to do with the possibilities that cards like it(or better, which is only a matter of time anyhow),would allow as far as graphics are concerned in a new B5 game, but in such a way as not only having the expected "eye candy" impact, but also playing a part in overall game interaction...

probably youd be playing what the first season was capable of.
  • I was thinking in terms of not just having very high quality ships but also having realistic looking battle damage depending on weapons used,to the point of showing serious damage(individual decks exposed, lots of debris,etc..)if larger, more powerfull weapons were used..Say,when two Cap ships were firing on each other... .

If the engines or lateral thrusters were hit,the ship's speed/manuvering capability would be affected accordingly...Or if the fighter bay was hit(with the larger cap ships),it wouldn't be able to launch fighters for some time...Another one would be the ability to destroy individual weapon systems(offensive/defensive),sheilds,etc..

Fighters would also be able to inflict visible damage to larger ships as well, but on a much smaller scale...Assuming they would actually survive long enough in the attempt... .

Goes without saying that it would be awfully nice to be able to also move freely inside the larger ships/bases in a first or third person viewpoint, which would actually be a requirement to complete some of the missions and move the story line along... .
  • can ya do that in UT2003?
I get simular performence in most games, (Except UT2003...that thing is rough on a graphics card! )
  • Quite easily actually...my average frame rate goes from 60~100 fps at 1600*1200 32,all details maxed out...That's when those 20 gigs/sec of bandwith really start to kick in...This thing just eats alive any game currently out on shelves... .

But this is about B5,and what you'd like to see happen with cards as powerfull as the 9700(as a minimum requirement. ),given that even if we do see a game,it'll still be a couple of years away anyhow(2~3 years...?),wich by then, there should cards out that are at least 5x faster in actual game performance than the 9700's if chip makers keep going at this insane pace...

You know what would rock? If you added in geomodding! (Think Red Faction here folks) That'd make for some realisitic battle damage! Instead of looking at just some glowing particles flying out of a model (ala Freespace), have entire sections of ships being cut up or blown away!

  • Funny thing is that i was thinking about that as well, but it would have to be quite a bit improved over what we saw in red faction tough...

What about planetary missions...I think that would be pretty cool as well, getting into a thunderbolt for a recon on the surface of a planet,or even as air support with a battle raging below...

B5:ITF did have that. It also had the polygon level collision detection that allowed hiding between little bits of ships and stations (go read Grinner's report on his trip to Sierra).

That's right. A feature I've been dreaming about a loooooong time. But now I will never get to hide in B5's main docking bay or somewhere behind the Cobra Bays and surprise attack an enemy. *sigh*

So get FS2 and wait for the B5 mod.

A buddy of mine actually just bought a Logitech joystick recently and got Freespace 2 with it. I'm planning to buy the same package myself in near future when I just get that much extra money for it. I've heard lots of good about FS2, but never have even tried it for some reason. Freespace 1 and 2 rock! I've been an FS player since the first demo, it has so much personality, a big plus compared to games nowadays. The graphics in FS2 are just as good too. Anyway, regarding battle damage, both Klingon Academy and Bridge Commander have what you're looking for. I believe that alot of B5 ships were modded for them as well. I think if someone could do a B5 Project similar to FS with Bridge Commander and it's graphics engine, (which nothing really can touch yet) it would be dazzling...So when is the B5:IFH demo coming??? Geez, I've been waiting and waiting and...

  • Played the freespace series and loved every minute of it,including the expansion that was released between FS1 and FS2(silent threat)....Still have all of them... .

Shame we'll never the third and final game...The second FS2 game left so many loose ends unanswered, storyline wise... .

Bridge Commander has that sort of damage model, but you only see chunks break off when you remove a large, prominent part of the ship (like a warp nacelle), and in that case it breaks at a predefined point.

  • I'd love to see that happen but not at pre-defined points either...

The damage effects should be possible at any point on the ships surface and vary according the type of weapon used against it...

Once the ship actually starts to blow up,since it can't take anymore damage, then you can have pre-determined "break points" of the major sections of the ship...

B5:ITF had it so that it would break apart at the point where the most fire had been concentrated.

  • Really???...Damn,makes me want to kick Sierra execs in the nuts for cancelling the game in the first place... .

Oh well...we'll have our game eventually...
