...and this is just the tip of the iceberg: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/6420AP_WA_Gates_Foundation_Buffett.html

Having been working around a fairly well connected not-for-profit recently, I'm begining to understand that there is more happening in the world of development and proverty reduction than gets publicized, more often overshadowed by the bad news. I think there is a fundimental shift in the way people, especially those in the top 1%, view the world and how to make it better.

For those who do not understand how significant Mr Buffett's donation to the Gates foundation is, this grant will basicly double the foundations endowment over time. Addtionally the Gates Foundation is one of the most efficient of the mega-foundations. Also, understand that much of the business world looks up to Buffett as a extraordinary business person, and will follow his lead. This will have a real impact in the level of philithopic giving in the world.

There are some who donate for the primary intention of a tax write off.

There are others who donates, especially those with a great deal of wealth (and the people in this category seem to be those who earned it, not inherited it), whos primary intention is because they feel its the right thing to do. These people that I have the up-most respect for and help restore my faith in humanity.
