Goddamn idiots... fucking idiots!

That's why I spare water, conserve energy, sort my trash, collect & recycle cans, bottles and cartons and an odd number of things.

And plastic rings? What the fuck is it with those things? If you have to buy beer in quantity, do it the Finnish Way: A six-pack (pure cardboard) - Mäyräkoira (12-pack, pure cardboard) or a case (Plastic, but fits a small dog :D. All recyclable, including bottles. And cans come in carboard packs as well, with so tight a single-piece plastic handle that it takes real trying from an animal to get stuck in it.

    Thats just plain nasty!!!

I remember me and my friends found a young hedgehog once that had gotten string wrapped around itself. It was hard to know if it had simply gotten caught or if some kids had done it on purpose. We cut it off and let it go. Luckly it had not cut into its skin.

I makes me so angry that people can be o lazy when it comes to recycling. In my block of flats (only 4 of us) one of my neighbours refuses to recycle. The bins are right there beside the normal refuse but he insists on chucking all his card board, plastic milk bottles, newspapers into the normal refuse! Really really pisses me off!! Its that same crap attitude that causes so much waste. Leaving lights on all day, not turning appliances off, filling a kettle up to the top for just 1 cup of tea/coffee. Gah really winds me up!!!

It also makes me real angry because I grew up on a farm which is where most of the waste we generate goes... i.e. into huge landfill sites out in the countryside, usually destroying someones farm in the process.

Man we sure know how to screw the plant up don't we!

That is one good thing, the six-pack ring has fallen out out of favor here too and you see it less and less. I think that is mainly due to the fact that us American consumers have a hard time buying anything in small qty anymore, we must get at least a 12 pack...

You dont see those rings very often here either..

As far as I know, nothing comes packaged with plastic rings around here anymore. 6 packs or less come in a cardboard packaging that holds the cans/bottles together, anything more than 12 comes on a cardboard tray, and anything in between may come in on a cardboard tray or in the same style of box as a 6 pack.

Now I wish retailers would cut down on th number of plastic bags...

Its why I ask for paper, and many times for justa couple items I say no bag please. Heck when I worked at a netural food store people brought in their own bag and saved a nickle.

Asking for paper doesn't help when most shops don't have anything but plastic bags. I usually ask for no bag when I'm only buying a few things, especially if I have my backpack with me.

Charging for bags is a good way to convince people they don't actually need a bag for those one or two items they bought.

About 4 years ago in Ireland they banned stores from giving away plastic bags with shopping. Now you have to pay 5 cents for a bag. Its been great as hardly anyone uses them any more and everyone uses either hard wearing reuseable plastic bags or cloth ones. I even brought some of the cloth ones here to the UK and I use em when I go shopping. Of course this country is still hesitating on banning plastic bags. And boy do I get some funny looks from people when I use the cloth bags... go figure.

What makes you think plastic bags are worse for the environment than paper? Paper bags cost more. Wonder why? The energy necessary for the production and processing of paper bags is greater than what is needed for plastic. What is energy made from? Oil. Just because the polution is invisible and combustible doesn't mean it is any less real.

Well at least paper bags can be recycled. Plastic ones can't. Plus they don't biodegrade very well unless specially made to do so. They add a huge amount to general litter on our streets and out in the countryside where they blow around and get stuck in everything.

But if we're going to say that using paper bags instead of plastic doesn't solve pollution well then what does? Everything we do causes pollution, consumes resources. The plants that recycle our waste have to get energy from somewhere. But at least recycling helps slow down the increase of landfill sites and in some way stops certain items from going into the ground and spoiling the water table.

But physical pollution in landfills is only one small part of the environmental damage we're doing. It isn't more substantial just because it's more visible. The same goes for worrying about plastic rings. I'm not saying I like them, but the cost of a few choked birds is insignificant compared to the cost of entire ecosystems that cease to be due to drastic shifts in temperature.

Recycling isn't a solution to anything. The only thing it helps with is landfill size. In terms of energy consumption and resultant pollution, in many cases, it can do more damage. That doesn't stop me from recycling as much as I can, but I do know it is, most often, little more than a warm fuzzy feeling.
