DVD Player Recommendations?

David of MacDavid of Mac Elite RangerCa
It appears that my DVD player has gone and died on me. It's a Panasonic, and seems to have fallen victim to a cheap spindle motor that jams up after a couple years of use. After reading about the problem (a very common one, I found out) on-line, I tried to fix it, and seem to have damaged the laser lens assembly in the process, because I'm a moron who doesn't realize that a half-inch of clearance is not enough to expect to get a drop of lubricant to the aforementioned spindle without screwing up something on the way. Considering that this replaced a Sony DVD player which also died thanks to a common failure (though not one I could try and fail to fix in my own home), I'm not too happy at the moment.

Can anyone tell me which brands of DVD players to look for that won't crap out in 2-3 years? Because if this happens again, I think I might become a masked vigilante who targets consumer electronics quality control people.

Panasonic ftw! \o/ My job's all about shifting Pana' gear from point A to point B.

On to the question... so far all experience I've had with DVD players have come from Yamada, a relatively unknown and rather cheap brand. Regardless I think's 3-4 years old and hardly ever 'jures up any trouble.

Bu again, my knowledge on the matter is very limited. That's me' ex's player I'm talking about. Since the split I'm now in the market myself for a new player, so all recommendations are heartily welcomed in this end as well. :)

I too have a Yamada DVD player, and have had it for 3 years now and never had any problems with it. I got it for £30 brand new, and its been excellent value for money, and its also a region free player. They'd get my recommendation. I mean, for that price, I dont care if it only lasts 3-4 years; the replacement parts if anything broke would probably cost more than the £30 I paid for it.

Certainly none of the cheap models from the big--name brands. Basically, all DVD players are built cheap these days.

Indeed. But for $39.99, what do you expect? ;)
  • My dad bought a Toshiba back in about 98. It only just stopped working about 6 months ago. It also had the fewest compatibility problems I've ever seen.

By strange coincidence, I settled on a Toshiba yesterday evening, but was distracted by such things as assembling a new office chair, setting up the DVD player, watching the season finale of "Doctor Who" (we'll miss you, Ninth!), and listening to the new BSG soundtrack, so I forgot to mention that I'd gotten one.

So, I got a Toshiba. It seems nice, maybe even a little better picture than the Panasonic, but that may have just been the new player/chair/episode/soundtrack halo effect. The only bad thing is that it's a little too small. The cable box only barely sits on top of it, so it looks kind of silly. But that's a minor
