Alternative browser?

MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
My dads operating system (2000 pro) cant find the cd/cd-burner or his usb ports, other programs than explorer do find them, but since most programs are explorer-based (i.e. browse function), what Im asking for right now is an alternative browser for looking at the drive(s).

He just re-installed the os, but it still doesnt work, any ideas for fixing?

Did he clear out the old copy of Windows before reinstalling? If he didn't and it's a configuration issue (Windows has the ability to hide drives) then that configuration would still be there. You could check if the drives are just being hidden by explorer by installing TweakUI and checking.

Is SP4 installed? If not, that could possibly fix some problems.

I should rephrase the problem..

A window pops up and says the drive isnt accessible when you left click it.
When you right click it, the cdrom starts up, and you can check the amount of space left, eject the drive etc.

He has installed SP4.

Make sure the mobo drivers (if any) are installed. Can get odd behavior like that if they're not and the ones native in windows don't quite talk to them right. Have a similar problem with XP pre SP1 on my system. System sees it, but when I try to access it, the drive scrams and windows doesn't recognize it anymore. also, make sure your cables are secure inside the case. a partial connection can cause oddities too,

Course, you may have already tried these. In which case, feel free to ignore this post. lol.

My best guesses are the mobo battery might need replacing and air can the dust off of surfaces of mobo.

Thanks for the suggestions. Dad doesnt quite trust me with the puter, so we will check them off in a few hours when hes ready to do it.. ;)

We have now flashed the bios, updated mobo drivers, vacuumed the inside of the box, updated and flashed the firmware of the cdrom, we have changed the battery on the mobo also..

Nothing works.

So, next up.. Formatting the drive and reinstalling windows 2000..

Update to come, watch this space. ;)

I am outta guesses.

Sorry I am clueless. If other software is detecting it, then some configuration is wrong but what would change that in the first place? Is this a Dell computer?

This is a weird problem.

It almost sounds as if some software you've installed is locking the drive. Also, if you didn't delete your old Windows install before installing the new one (just boot from a floppy and deltree the dir), then a virus or trojan might not have been killed that had infected an Explorer DLL.

You didn't, by any chance, install a Sony BMG music CD? From what I've read, that might do this after trying to remove the bad software they put on with it.

He did install sonyericsson phone connecting software, but it sounds a bit far-fetched for that to be it..

Its a shuttle barebone pc. We were thinking that the antivirus software might have been shutting it out, but after closing them, the problem persisted. We did not try to reboot however.

Im in the middle of backing up my software right now, so the formatting havent started yet..
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
Well, he formatted the drive, and reinstalled the os, and now its working like a charm.

Thanks anyway for the advice guys.. :)

So what I said in my first post then. :D The number of times I've fixed a windows problem by formating and reinstalling... So often it's just faster and easier to do that than try to diagnose and fix the problem properly, even with all the backing up that needs to be done.

But it is so much more fun trying to fix it. Like instead of calling a locksmith because I locked myself out of my 2nd story apartment we put a step ladder on a fridge which was on cinderblocks becase my window wasn't shut. Sadly we were still a foot too short.

No. Linux is more fun to try and fix, because it has the tools available right there and you can actually find out what's going on inside the system. Windows is just an annoying pain of a black box.
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
Yeah, problem is that formatting is so definitive..

On the other hand, starting over with a clean slate feels pretty good too.. :)

It does help clear out all the crap that windows accumulates.
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
I reckon..

I threw my own puter out the window last week, so Ill be getting a new soon. Hopefully a portable this time like I wanted last summer.. (Or perhaps a mini mac??)
