The article claims that biodiesel is cheaper than petrol, and at the pump it is, but I just wanted to make clear, that is because it is subsidized at production. The current cost of producing a gallon of B100 (100% biodiesel) is around 2.30 to 2.50 a gallon, far from where it needs to be to make a profit on its own.
The real issue is that in the US we use soybeans as a feedstock, and of the major oil crops, its one of the lowest yeilding per acre. If we could find an oil producing crop that provides significantly more oil per acre, then biodiesel would be cheaper.
Here is a short list of cultivated oil crops: http://www.journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_yield.html Once it gets posted to the web, I will provide a link to the biofuels study that my team just completed for school.
