Idea for a B5 web project
I had this idea and I mulled it over a bit and so now I am posting it here. Now, I have no idea what it would cost to do this, how much time it would take, how much server space it would take, ect. So if this is totally unfeasable, please say so because I have no experiance with this and I am just an idea guy...
So here it is:
Many of you have played Planetarion or games like it. I am thinking we could create a game like this for Babylon 5. You would choose a race (Earth Alliance, Minbari, Narn, Centauri, ect) and then an allegiance (such as revolutionist, military commander, and neutral). You then start off on a planet in your races area and start doing things like building bases/buildings on you planet, interacting with the rest of the people in your system, fighting, building units, researching, ect. You can use spys, and other things like that.
The Map:
The way I imagine it would be to have a galctic map with colored areas to represent which areas belong to which races.
This is not all, but before I continue on please let me know if this is pointless or not. Is anyone interested? Any questions? Thanks.

We know only that it is always born in pain." G'Kar, Season 3

It would be fun, Sanfam could host it
I'm just not motivated enough to get off my @$$ and do it... heh heh heh...
I'm too tired these days to put a lot of time into a big project like that any more. The candle has become short and time is better spent in time with my family.
I have often thought that this would be a good fun type of game for the B5 universe though.

I thought the paraworlds game was dead?

Galen: I dont, I have no surviving enemies...at all

So, is there anyone willing to explore this possibility? I was thinking along the lines of Planetarion or Earth 2050... Based off stratagy. The current problem I am thinking of is lets say you start deep in EA space. You can jump to take over another planet in Narn space. However the two planets are not close to each other. I am thinking in terms of a graphical map that is used more to gauge how races are expanding and things like that, not along the lines of the other game everyone started playing a few months ago (cant remeber the name now... you know what I am talking about). So, if there is anyone who thinks they can do this, let me know. I can help with the ideas and things, probably I cant help with the tech stuff though.
Then design the engine around it.
Just my lowly $.02...
i remember kicking ass there
whatever happened to our pet game: space conflict?

That is the game I was trying to think of. It went pay only like so many other good web games. Can anyone do what JackN is talking about?

nope, i doubt anyone would invest into such game
Glad to see optimism!
But with a baby comming in less than two months (August 5th ) and work being work I just couldnt do it, at the moment anyway! If work gets a little less hectic and if no-one else has picked it up then I should be able to put some time and effort into coding it, but this is several months away -- im hoping someone else reading will pick it up and turn a great idea into something real and playable! Well if you plan on using a MySQL database to maintain all the stats, we should focus on it first, like designing it to contain everything that could possibly be needed.
Then design the engine around it.

Yes, schema creation is important, but I don't think it makes sense to create one until you have the basic game flow worked out, since game flow will have a huge impact on dependencies.
So, I think maybe spend some time on game flow and very basic high-level overview, that a technical spec and schema going in parallel, and once those are done, write the code around it. What do you think?
P.S. I will have very little to no time to contribute to this project, but it is an interesting idea.
