If anyone's interested.. there's another B5 project in the works..

Over here from the Starfleet Command community and just letting anyone who is interested in the game know that we've been working on a Babylon 5 total conversion for Starfleet Command for about a month+ now..

You could visit our forums and check out our WIP shots (www.b5fc.ca.tc) or else just enjoy the screenshots. We're expecting the mod to take a bit, but we'll be replacing everything we can get our hands on. My demo here is a good example.. everything in these shots except space itself and the dust has been replaced.

What's really amazing is that the Movie-era Trek computer interface looks so much like the B5 computer screens seen on C&C every so often.

And I almost forgot: Incredible station! I love it!

• Thanks.. but wait a few days and I'll be finished tweaking and it'll be finally released. Today was spent doing a bit more color matching and finishing off light mapping. There's roughly 75 lights on this that'll come on when the ambient light goes down to that point, plus spotlighting.

It's taken me roughly four weeks of steady work (interrupted by RL and such) to get things to this state using the model's original textures as a basis point. But I'm happy with the result. Next will be B4 and Station Io..

The way was clear to rebuild this land. Shall I call on you to guide me well, To see our hopes and dreams fulfilled? On this day of our ascension.

Very cool!

Just a tip: if you're going to post large images (eg bigger than 800x600) or multiple images, use text links or thumbnails. It's kinder to those of us still stuck on 56k modems (or worse).

It's been great to get ingame, butit comes in the middle of personal tragedy as well.. so as a result I've dedicated the release of this station to my dad, who died last week after a 40+ year battle with alcohol.

He may not have understood it, he might not have got the idea of it, but Babylon 5 is about hope. And my dad is somewhere better now, free of the demon that pursued him most of his life. So Dad, wherever you are.. this work is dedicated to you. It'll be a little legacy of his that will go worldwide.

Current plans are to use SFC 2:OP as the basis for the conversion, but we're also putting out as many SFC 1 models as we can.. (I'm making sure that B5 itself has the SFC 1 version, and it's one texture away from completion). I personally prefer SFC 1 over SFC 2 simply because it runs on lower end systems, is faster, I think allows more choices for just get in and dirty battles, and I generally prefer it. It doesn't have as many race slots though as OP, or as many weapons. And as you can see above, there's Starfuries, Victory-class Destroyers, and Omegas, all with different weapon systems.

Actually, condolence messages just make things worse for me. I consider his death to have been a release for him, and it's only when people keep saying "Sorry" that I start to feel like maybe there's something wrong in my attitude towards it. So I don't look at his death being a bad thing, because he finally got free of his personal monkey on his back. Just didn't pick the best way to do it, but oh well...that's my opinion.

Thanks.. it's something that made the most sense.. time an orbit around the station, and take a shot about every eight count or so..
[b]
How much of the conversion have you got done so far?

We're wrapping up the Earth Alliance right now... but the thing to remember here is that getting B5 into SFC has been a long term project from wayback, with two other attempts. We're incorporating the best models from those two previous attempts into this one (because the people involved there are in now with this one).

So it's hard to say exactly how many models we have really.. but we're probably about 85% complete with the EA right now, maybe 5-10% done with the Minbari, 2-5% on the Narn, and about that level with the other races. My best guess anyways..

For planets, there's really only a few that we have to model.. Z'Ha'Dum, Epsilon 3, and maybe Earth, the Narn homeworld, Centauri Prime, we're thinking about the Vorlon Homeworld (obviously tough because noone has ever seen it), Minbar, and maybe a few others.

Space nebulas are easy to replace to look more like what we'd see in B5..

Then it's changing things like ship string names so you can get something like "EAS Agrippa" instead of "NCC-1705 Grumman" for example.

It'll be a lot of work, but when it's all done it'll look awesome.
• By the way, I want to correct something. I know the proper name is Omega class destroyer, not cruiser.
Just a typographical error. Most likely made because it goes against my grain to call it a
destroyer, since it really fits into the cruiser category of capital ships, but Earth Force
oddly has termed it a destroyer (I guess they were thinking more along the lines of the Star Destroyer
class of ships from Star Wars, a powerful capital ship that could take on other heavy enemy warships).

This is the latest to come out... we have new Minbari ships in the works, I'm working on a new version of the Omega, Nova, and Omega-X with more detail, the EA ringstation is almost complete, there's new Narn's happening.. if you have Starfleet Command or know someone who'd be interested, swing by for a visit.

Oh, and the website is almost complete as well.. that'll give more detail on the project (like who all is involved in it, what they do, etc.)

Minor comment:
Babylon 5 Fleet Command sounds strange.

Instead, try Babylon 5: Fleet Command.

the colon adds a lot to the name. Instead of doing something with a fleet of babylon stations, you command a fleet of some sort, which may or may not contain station(s)

That's just my two cents.

actually, make that three cents.
I don't breally believe Ivanova or Marcus are legends. You might want to keep it brief at Sinclair, Delenn, and Sheridan.

The colon does add a lot. The one reason why we didn't add it though was simply for continuity with the game we're modding.. Starfleet Command. (no colon). That and it'd be a pain to go through and correct everything now.

I do disagree with you on the point with Marcus and Ivanova though for one reason.. the episode "Deconstruction of Falling Stars" mentions them specifically 500 years later on a backwater burned out planet that had reverted to a low-level tech state. If that isn't being a legend, I don't know what is.

We have some all new original designs here as well... other than the Tinashi and the Sharlin in this picture, all the rest are original designs done up by members of the team.

We also have out first and second original ingame music pieces done, battle music for the EA and the Narn.

I agree as well.. his textures are really making these meshes shine.

Our Darkstar (the small Whitestar derivitive that is right at the front) should be illuminated by this afternoon.. I'll post a pic of it when it's all done.

The nice thing about using Starfleet Command as our game engine is that the tools to do all this work is readily available and easy to modify things with.

I use 3dsMax r3 (that I got at an auction sale for $15) to apply the textures with and do some modifications (if needed) to the meshes, the plugin for it is bi-directional, so the models import and export easily to the game. And Paint Shop Pro will let me do the texture modification work I need. Three programs to do all this with is simply phenomenal... and it makes modding the game a dream.

And we're extremely lucky to have several talented modellers working on the project, plus the fellow doing excellent original music for us.. it's going to be an awesome mod when completed.

• Okay, I've added two more lights to the back hood of the DarkStar, and I think that's all I really want to add.. Anything else and I'll be risking ruining the looks of things.

So these lights are visible only from behind and underneath, which is in line with the idea of a Black Ops ship.. you want as little viewable from the front as necessary, and of what is visible, you want that misleading.

And I thought a good way to show it off is in a "gunslinger" type shot..
