Solaris!!

MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
Is an extremely good movie. I like most of Steven Soederberghs movies, but I didnt know he could make such great sci-fi.

See it!!

Unfortunately I just missed it a short while ago when it aired. I guess I gotta download it now.

Be warned that it isnt an action flick though. Its more of a philosophical "star trekky" type of film. :)

Gotta love a Star Trekky once in a while ;)

Not sure the Star Trek comparison fits. Solaris could have played in a haunted mansion and it wouldn't have played much differently. Just because you have hatches, space suits and a space station doesn't make it a derivative of Star Trek. (Granted ST:TMP sucked just as bad... but it's in stark contrast to 99.9% of the rest of the franchise.)

IMHO it's a bit too far out there to cater to regular scifi action fans. It's a bit like spending some time with the monolith (2001: A Space Odyssey) in that white room with Dave Bowman and Spoiler: theorizing about the possible consequences of bringing a totally alien lifeform back to earth. This movie isn't as much about the destination as it is about the journey to get there. Space can be a very boring place once you start thinking about it and Solaris proves that. Stanley Kubrick did a much better job back then.

Steven Soderbergh isn't your averge director but neither is Tim Burton, and I'm not particularly impressed by their work. At least with Tim Burton you know what you are getting into before you go see one of his movies. :D

Solaris IMDB rating: 6.3/10 (14874 votes)
2001: A Space Odyssey IMDB rating: 8.3/10 (77255 votes)

Do yourself a favor and go rent 2001 and watch it again, for the first time. ;)

Oh, and if you want to see something star trekky, watch 2010, the sequel to 2001, it doesn't take itself so seriously and it mixes action with humor and drama. All it lacks are characters with pointed ears. :D
• For good or worse I had watched the Original Solaris Film, by Tarkovski before the remake.
I didn't like the new version much. The first one is much more brainy and misterious, also full of striking visuals (made with technology 30 years older than the Hollywood Solaris)
The Soderbergh/Clooney version is Solaris Lite.
Also, Solaris Lite was based on the first movie, not on the novel.

Read the novel by Stanislav Lem.
Also watch the original film, there's a remastered DVD out.

Oh, didnt know there was an original..

Cool gotta go get it then.

I was hoping to chime in, but Capt. Montoya beat me to it. Seriously consider checking out the original Solaris, as it is far better than the Soderbergh remake could ever hope to be. Plus, it's subtitled and a lot more interesting, visually speaking.
