I want it to be part mechwarrior at heart.
I want to be able to customize a combat mech and use it on the field in a highly populated server against other customized mechs and/or power armor suits. Considering how customizable BF can be, it seems somewhat reasonable that it could be done. Simply use it as a spawn-based thing. Set your preferences in a central interface, and either hotkey or make it a part of the menu, like player class selection. If you enter a mech on a launching pad, machines nearby would slap guns of your choice on and you could walk into combat. If you get a mech in the field, you get someone else's preferences.
But that's only my dream. :p
Hopefully this game will feel fresh. Most new FPS' are good for a while, but really just don't catch my interest for long ... Then again, I guess it's all about perspective. I dunno, I've played lots of games... But only own about ten over a period of seven years. I have such fond memories of some games, it's hard to find that magic again in the new stuff, at least - From my perspective.
i'm glad the trend is going away from modern combat US vs Iraq vs RandomEnemyState setting to something else (and similarly glad it's not a ww2 one  )
i don't think it will be overly customisable, like sanfam said about different loadouts - simply because it's EA and they are always struggling with just the basic gameplay features (as in: getting the game to actually run and trying to get the bug list to be 1 entry shorter than the features list)
ah well.. it will have to compete with ut2k7, ET: Quake Wars and to some degree with Huxley (still not sure how many vehicles that one will feature). we'll see...
[B]i got mixed feelings about it.

I was kinda hoping it would go the other direction in time though I was really looking forward to Battlefield 1865 where you reenact the great battles of the Civil War from a first person perspective...

yeah but noone would love to play a game where it takes a minute to reload after a single shot :D
but it's nice to see someone finally leeching off from planetside with the cloakers and the bfrs/mechs, maybe it will be another point where sony will go "wait a second.." (doubtful)
Of course, the best mod is still Battlefield: Pirates
Nothing beats it for sheer rediculous fun.

I wonder if the "medic" in that game would have a hacksaw to amputate the shattered limbs of his teammates. :D

If you REALLY want to ge technical, some soldiers carried breach-loading (Springfield) and even repeating (Spencer and Henry) rifles into battle (Although the former was rare, and the latter even rarer still).
I might have to look into this Battlefield 1942 Civil War mod... :)
