Oblivion

RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
Well I didn't see a topic floating around about Oblivion (sequel to Morrowind), so I figured I would start one to see if any of you are buying it/what you are planning on playing as/general thoughts. As for me, I have my preorder in even though I know I will probably not be able to play for a while- but after eight weeks of insane class and work (and another eight weeks coming up) I figured I could get it right away and play a couple hours a week. So, anyone else planning on giving it a go?

P.S. If this has already been discussed and I missed it while away, feel free to chastise me :D

I'm hoping to have the money to get it the day it comes out (thursday). Not sure if I'll actually have time to play it, though.

Ill buy it this summer after I get my 360. Ive been trying to get conversations going all over the place, but..

Yea I feel bad buying it knowing I won't have too much time to play it, but I really want the collectors edition (and its pretty much my only gaming purchase of the year so far) so I figured I should just go for it before it sells out.

Ok, so just wanted to share this little character creation website- has been a great help. Located here: http://www.oblivionmods.info/

So for example, here is what I think I will be playing as (if you have any thoughts feel free to share them). Planning on playing as a charasmatic ranger character who switches between sword and bow (using swords primarily, however). I do not plan on using magic extensively (every once in a while using a destruction spell or healing spell), nor do I plan to thieve except for every once in a while.

I figure I'm about 2 (good) months from playing it.

IF I can get 2-3 GOOD clients before then, I'll be able to pay off my debt and get some MUCH needed upgrades to play a game like that.

Good luck with that, sounds like you are busier than I am! It's probably going to be two months before I get time to play it for a significant amount of time, but oh well. Anyone else looking into getting Oblivion?

I got a copy today (finally - whomever was in charge of distribution in NZ needs to be shot). Here are my impressions, copied from IRC because I'm too lazy to retype them.

oblivion is great!
so much fun
so much joy
and so relaxing, once you get out of those damn sewers and can begin wandering around the countryside, enjoying the scenery :)

dear lord oblivion looks beautiful
i was wandering around the capital and it started raining :)
then i went out into the countryside and it stopped
so i stood on a cliff and watched the sun set and the stars come out
i was standing on a cliff overlooking a lake with a dock on a small island in the middle and a sailing ship in it (still not sure what a large sailing ship was doing on a lake) with hills on the other side and mountains in the distance

(Looking at the map now, I can see that it's actually a very long, narrow inlet, not a lake.)

I can run it with all the detail sliders at max at 1024x768 and it runs smoothly, which I'm very pleased about. My only complaints are that the grass popping into existence takes a while to get used to and Spoiler: that Patrick Stewart isn't in it enough.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Spoiler: Don't you get to kill him if you join the assassins guild?

I want Oblivion also, but this weekend I'll be playing GW: Factions preview event.

I can't still deside if I want to buy Oblivion for my computer or xbox360.

Read a review where they talked a lot about taking peoples food and watching what they did when they got hungry. Hilarious!

Well I got it, or rather my wife did. She picked it up ofr the 360 on launch day here and has been playing it a lot more than she usually plays a game. The last game she really got sucked into was Vampire: The Masquerade (I love that game too btw).

Im not sure I like. Its pretty enough, but there is something to be said about RPG's with real human interaction. It gets boring playing an RPG by myself.

Ill just stick to playing Burnout (last night I was 142 on the server and I have won a headset), Bejeweled and Blazing Angels came out today, gotta go pick it up.

The last RPG i played was called Wasteland on a Apple IIGS. The reviews and comments here for Oblivion look amazing I might give it a shot.
• I hate this game so much. Why am I still playing it?

AHHHH.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Because, deep down, you don't really hate it. You just want to be in with the haters. Give in to your true desire, and be in with the likers!
• My screen starts artifacting after about fifteen minutes of playtime. :(

Well, Bethesda is infamous for producing some of the most abitious games ever, but also producing them relatively buggy. :)

I'm playing with most of the available graphics options on, including Bloom and excluding shadows, at 1024x768 with maximum visibility and the 'fade distances" set around the middle.

Everything runs silky smooth absolutely everywhere. Except the West Weald region for some reason where it starts to chug slightly.

great thing about Oblivion, is the Mod scene...

from high-res texture packs, to weapons (Some good ones) to quest, to details like seasons, birds, and insect life, to real Ranger charector (With pet) to the ability to recruit people to your group and go question with NPCs...but if you do that you may want more bad guys, so get Adrenalin Oblivion that adds hordes of baddies! No more 2 skeletons in a dungon!
(Yes, these are all out)

Great thing about the Mod community is, you can choose to NEVER be done. :D
