NBC Olympic Coverage

in Zocalo v2.0
I realize most of the folks in the US couldn't care less about Biathlon or Cross Country. I'd like to hope it's just because they just don't understand. However, the coverage of these Olympic sports (and a few others) by NBC is just insulting to those of us who love and support them*. It is time for NBC to loose the Olympics and for Bob Costas to be MUTED!
In the Mountain time zone in order to watch any of these sports I have to be up at 04:00 and watching a cable channel. I understand not putting these sports in prime time ~ I even understand them being on the cable channels. But at 4AM and not even live?!
My hope was to go to the local sports bar where each booth has it's own flat screen to watch... ...but my Olympic dreams have been dashed. :(
Where is the innovation? Where is at least the streaming video?
Do any of my friends who "get it" across the pond have TV stations that are streaming video OTHER than the medal ceremonies?
*I'm a X-C instructor on weekends at a resort here in Utah.

I hate the annoncer talking during the cerimonies (yes I can SEE that is fire, DUH). And I hate not having coverage on other sports that I think would be cool to at least watch a bit of it. Why can't it be streamed?! I know bandwith cost a chunk of change but sheesh!
I picked up an off air HDTV antenna for my HDTV last month, for some reason, I cant get local channels in HD from DirecTV, so this is what I have to do. The original idea was to watch the Superbowl in HD, Ive gotten kind of spoiled by NFL Sunday ticket. Anyways... the point Im getting too.
When I set it up I found that most of my local station broadcast several Digital Signals not just one. For example ABC and CBS are both broadcasting 3 seperate channels in digital. NBC in my area isnt broadcasting anything yet in Tyler but I hear in other markets on their alternate digital channels they are showing more of the Olympics.
Now granted, you need both a TV capable of recieving and decoding a digital signal and the off air HDTV antenna to recieve it, but it might be there.
Just as a side note, the ABC tower in North Tyler collapsed the Thursday before the Superbowl, so I had to watch it in standard analog anyways... link to tower collapse
AND, if you want to watch it "illegally", you can download this program:
http://www.tvkoo.com/update/viviplay.exe (slow page)
And select "TV-M: Tv1" and "TV-M:Tv2" from the list. It is a chinese p2p application which streams channels on the internet.....and those two channnels are norwegian ones sending the olympics. Not really legal though.
They are broadcasting in 5.1 for HDTV...and guess what? They are underboosting the center channel so when down-converting it to a stereo TV you can barely hear the people speak over the music.
On my parent's 20" normal def TV you can't read the country, see the country flag, or read the times for anyone - the text is about the size of this text...from 12 feet away! Rediculous.
What happened to speed skating last night? They didn't even comment on Apollo Ono, the 2002 gold medalist, getting knocked out of his medel run during the semifinals!
And whatever happened to any of the cultural aspect of the host city? It used to be they would show you some of the city and the nation where the event is hosted. Now they just show you the hills.
And why haven't they shown us a map of the Luge? They finally showed us the Alpine track on Sunday...the 3rd day they showed the Alpine race. And their website isn't any better. If you want to see the luge track, you have to go to the official olympics site and download the spectator guide to venues - nicely presented in PDF format.
Very very poor coverage...but it's what I've come to expect from the Olympics. The last 10 years not a single station has had good coverage. The last good broadcast I remember was Lillehammer in 1994. That's saying something.
[B]I love the spirit of the Olympics.

The Bob Costas and Matt Laurer did a much better job with opening ceremonies this time around than Katire Curic and Matt did for the games in Greece, holy hell, it was like watching the best movie in the world with two loudmouths in the front row complaining about the resturaunt they just ate at...
BTW: Ferrari V10 + Olympic Opening Ceremonies = Much Coolness.

"Streams temporarily not available everywhere because of the strict rules of the International Olympic Committee concerning internet spread of image material of the Olympic Games." Translated by me but German seems to be close ~ so give or take...
The good news is that I can neither confirm nor deny my use of the program from China. ;)
Thanks for that Mundane I may or may not have managed to catch three great events while at the office. :)

Hehe, and just imagine the possibilities P2P and television gives you....
Its an entertainment industry now.
The irony is that most athletes still struggle to make financial ends meet, especially if they are not in a glamourous high profile sport.
Free pistol shooting for instance... is about as spectacular as washing dishes.
Therefore it gets virtually zero coverage.
The whole fucking thing needs to be democratised and for the IOC to let everyone and everyone stream or distribute what they want to
Rather than the big corporate model.. adopt a 'for the people' approach and let the consumer buy WHAT THEY WANT TO SEE, not have the glamourous crap shoved down thier throats.
Anyways... its sports...
I'd rather watch Pro-tournament Poker... where the MIND is the really important thing
