I would dazzle you with my leet photoshop skills, but alas, I have none (unless you want a photo cropped, red eye reduced, or maybe resize it).
Im guessing that was done in lightwave, or at least partially. If you dont mind my asking Jack, how long does it take to make something that complicated? And/or is this something you can learn playing with the program and a book, or is it more of an art?
I dabbled for a while in 3d Studio Max/GMax (the free version) and did some online training, and eventually came out with something that looked "close" to the project I was supposed to be doing. But to do something totally original Im guessing is beyond my artistic talents.
It just looks fun to be able to create something like that, Im wondering if I invested in the real program, would I just be frustrated without any real instruction or is it intuitive.
I will quit asking the same question now, sorry. Its a beautiful render Jack.
This scene here took me several years, because it was originally conceived during the U-571 movie era.
I am a modeler by far, but have been progressively learning the animation side over the years. Most especially lighting techniques in the past few years.
I'd say total time involved in this scene is around 2 weeks of actual model, texture, render. Several years because it was an on-and-off project on my hard drive.
Lightwave is very intuitive to me, that's not the case for everyone, although I'd saythat if you had troubles with Max, you're likely to work in Lightwave with less frustration.
As with anything, the biggest enemy is time and learning the tools. Once you know the tools you can get out of LW what you visulaize in your mind quite fast. IMHO that is... ;)
I'd saydon't expect to learn it all in a few days, and just enjoy the steps along the way for the next few years of your life... and you'll do fine! ;)
Anyway, I can attest to it being fun, but often frustrating. This is the stage I'm currently at. The dragon is base on the one from Shrek, the rest are all my own concepts.
As Jack says, beyond having a certain base aptitude for visualising things, it's all a matter of time. Something I never seem to have... But I like to tinker and play so that's what I do. I never really aim to get a shot like what Jack can do out of it.
Plus there's the fact that I never seem to finish a model. :) Large chunks of those models seen above are just placeholder parts until the actual parts get done.
