Worf
Funny.
Reminded me of the Mad TV sketch about the Spishak Mach 20 (can only find a transcription online, not the video).
YES! I was mentioning the Mach 20 on IRC, too. It's a damned good commercial, a video of which I'd really like to find.

well i dont like to blow my own horn or anything, but......;)
Changing blades is a landmine for razor burn. I've found your skin takes a liking to blades after a while, but if you suddenly change to another type of blade, your skin can react with "Hump!". Don't be put off by this though, as usually it will sort itself out.
BTW, remember its not JUST the blade that makes a shave. For the Gilette blades, I'd recommend using the Gilette Shaving Cream(Foam) (Or Pamolive, etv) - Sensitive one if you prefer. Apply it with a horse-hair brush, to a warm rinsed face. It's a more expensive option than shaving gel or soap, but I've found those don't work well and take too much time.
Then just get shaving, if you plan on going against the grain, take it steady and don't go over the same area too many times. Against the grain is the direction that your beard *always* feels slightly rough, even after a perfect shave, the opposite direction gives away the position of your facial hairs. ;)
After a shave, rinse with warm water first - THEN with cool/cold water. I know it doesn't feel nice, but this helps close up the skin, which also aids with any cuts you have (I get a cut maybe once a week at most, sometimes never). Always use a moisturizer (spelling?) like Nivea Aftershave Balm. I can highly recommend this, as it makes your skin nice and smooth/fresh.

It's been good for me. Once I started using a rotary blade electric shaver (can't remember the model) it's been the closest shave, it's also more convenient.
But if I don't shave for more than a day I have to use a blade, my beard becomes too thick and long for the electric shaver. In those cases I use Nivea shaving foam for sensitive skin and a Mach 3 Pro.
However the pre-eletric shave oils are not that convincing. I used them for a while but now I shave dry, most of the time that is not so irritating, guess my skin is used to that now.
I use Neutrogena Razor Defense Daily Face Scrub. Seems to help, at least it does clean the excess oil from my face.
I've used Nivea Men Aftershave Balm, shame I can't get it where I'm now. I'm now using Neutrogena Razor Defense Face Lotion as aftershave.
I had heard about rinsing with cold water at the end but forgot about it. I think I should try that again.
Sanfam:
I'd love to have a video of the Spishak Mach 20 too. The planetmadtv site I linked for the transcription has some threads with links to some MadTV videos but I can't find that one. Google doesn't find it either.

damnit biggles, just what are you implying!?
Im familiar with dual edge type razors, those were the default razors back in the day before the introduction of the cartirdge razor. They work well enough, but Im to fargin lazy to deal with em.
I dont worry to much about razor burn, cause I tend to not feel the effects after a few minutes. Then again, Im the sicko that will notice I cut myself while shaving, shrug, and slap on the aftershave and go. Yeah, so it feels like burning, what ever, Ive felt worse.
I might try this new razor, I love my mach 3, because for me it seems to always clog less, and clear easier then the Shicks, dont know why others experience is different.
Oh and you guys who go a few days between shaving. Im with SpiritOne. I HATE YOU ALL BASTARDS.

(I can go almost three days at the most if the original shave is close.) ;)
notice its those guys that always get the parts in the razor comercials too. Just once I want to see a guy ACTUALLY need to shave before doing so on a comercial.

I decided to give the Double Edge side of the world a shot, and so for the last month and a half, I've been armed with a basic Merkur each morning.
Honestly, I don't think I'll ever go back to cartridge razors. It's just so much better all-around. Razor burn is a thing of the past...and days when I'm not the most concious and happen to go over the same spot a few too many times :P But generally speaking, the quality of my daily shave is far superior. The only cost is time. It now takes five to ten minutes to get a good shave in.
Also, it really is true that good blades make all the difference. The local-bought Wegmans 10-pack, while convenient, was not a match for the Merkur set. And considering the price difference (insubstantial), there's no reason not to go with the $4 pack of Merkur razors.
Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I've been struggling to find a decent shaving solution for the last 6 months and 4 days. I'm seriously considering a Merkur, especially after reading this article.

Sanfam, I have heard (from one of my good friends) that beards are a bit of a put-off to the fairer sex. Still, it's currently the lesser of two evils whilst I try to loose some weight... ;)
The trick is to find those of the fairer sex who actually like beards. They arent that few.. ;)
I used to get razor burn, especially around the adam's apple. But then I found something called a pre-shave lotion made by Gatsby, you put it on a couple of minutes before shaving and it makes your skin feel sort of cool and smooth. Haven't had a single razor burn since I started using it. I haven't even had a need for an after shave.

Beards seem to be especially uncomfortable when it comes to Col. Angus.
For gel I use Gillette Series clear shave gel.. Just need to wet the beard a bit, put this on, rub a while and let it be for a minute.. Then when shaving small strokes and always lifting the razor up from the skin after every stroke...
The beard literally disappears. I dunno. It just works wonders. Ofcourse, nowadays I only really need to shave the easiest part anyway which is the throat. But really recommend it.. Need to check if can find more of it from finland. The tube I have I got from UK..
And for razor.. WEll, The first "new" battery powered one from gillette is doing wonders still. Using one razorblade for about a month.
Tyvar, do you know of any place I could get a razor thike this in the portland area? I declare Fred Meyer and Walgreens to suck when it comes to this ;)
If you are looking for something like a Merkur razor and a good shave brush, check with nicer cigar or smoke shops. They often carry other higher-end mens accessories.

I'm fortunate in that there's a specialist shaving shop a short walk from uni.
I've used a dual edge for about a month now and I must say that I am quite happy with it. I still get the occasional nick and/or cut, but overall its been well worth the extra up-front cost.
