Serenity - Any good?

Am thinking of seeing film at cinema. Have you seen it and is it any good. The trailer looked good so am hoping its better than the series Firefly cos I couldn't get attached to that at all without finding it bit boring.

Well, you'll have to see for yourself and find out. :D
• Absolutely terrible. Don't touch it with a ten foot pole. It seemed like it'd be cool but the fifty-foot pink bunny rabbits ruined it.

Hey! The 50-foot pink bunnies rocked!

Not to be too serious, but I think of it as a slightly better-than-average episode of a great series. There are some, shall we say, questionable dramatic decisions. The best description I've heard of them were that the seemed to be caused by "Joss taking his Joss-ness too seriously." Personally, I think the same sort of problem was described in the writer's commentary on Star Trek: Generations; You're trying so hard not to do what people are expecting that you put that perceived need for unexpectedness before the good of the story.

I really wish I could juggle the timeline so that "Out of Gas" closed off the Firefly story, though. None of the endings yet made would work as well as that to cap off the series.

Thats odd, I predicted a lot of things (sans the 2nd obvious) quite well as I watched the movie

Personally, I thought watching Serenity was like watching the original Star Wars trilogy again for the first time.

And that's what I was specifically talking about. Few movies would do that in that way. Critcally examined, the event doesn't even make sense, but it gets a pass purely because of what it is, and when it happens, and what its effect on the viewing experiance is. It's the plot equivalent of a particularly impressive special effect. You could have a title card that reads "You-Know-What Happens" as a placeholder in the rough cut, it's so special-effect-like. ;)

I haven't seen a second of the Firefly series, but enjoyed Serenity. It was predictable, but so is almost everything from Hollywood, there is no allowance for moving too far from the formula.
That said, I think it's worth the $10US or whatever theaters cost where you live.

My belief was suspended, and that is more that can be said for a lot of movies

I saw it three times as a show of support, and I liked it, but it is more formulaic than Firefly was. There are a lot of things that are done better, but Whedon's greatest strength as an entertainer is also his greatest weakness. All the Firefly characters are there; Zoe is tough, Wash is funny, and Jayne is tough and funny, and Spoiler: Simon and Kaylee finally have sex. [Admin Edit: Always use spoilerspaces]

The story hits all the right notes so that none of the fans feel like they went through three years of hard work for nothing, but it fails to ever really do anything artistically interesting or thought provoking. But it is charming, and I had fun, and I really wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Just don't expect something brilliant.

To sum up Arethusa's post: Go to it expecting entertainment, not art, and you won't be disappointed. :p

Well, it's unfortunate because there were times Firefly took chances with directions more meaningful and intersting than entertainment, and they usually worked (Out of Gas; the ending of Jaynestown; Objects in Space). Serenity really doesn't bother with any of that, except perhaps briefly for a moment or two.

We have to also appricate that Serenity had to cater to both firefly fans and new people, which i could see prevent a great deal from happening as the two groups would see the characters differently

• To quote my favorite author:
It's great.

I'm not going to say it's the best science fiction movie, ever.

Oh, wait. Yes I am.
And this comes from a guy, judging by other stuff on his site, who does not normally like Sci-Fi movies.

Thanks guys!
Ok I've seen it. Saw it before I had another chance to get here. I partly wanted to know because I actually chose it at my parents Cinema since they've had to close down.
Anyway I thought it was great!! Had plenty of action and the actors seemed better in it. I remember in Firefly they seemed quite boring. They had a few funy quips. Definitely an entertainment film. Agreed that some of it was abit predictable. As for the Reavers I don't recall them at all since I only watched a few Firefly episodes and I thought the story about how they came about - how it was explained was really interesting and not predictable at all. And I was wondering whether Firefly fans appreciated that part or not?

The only thing I was expecting was more shoot em ups in actual space. On the trailer it looked more like that. Oh yeah and the spcaecrafts I thought looked really dated IMO. Specially that yellow tractor like thing on that planet. I was expecting more like B5 state of the art. But overall a good film and one I could see again.
I don't know why Joe couldn't get any luck with a B5 movie at the Cinemas. He had as we know 5 seasons of B5 and it wasn't stopped due to low figures so how come Joss managed to spin a movie and Joe hasn't? The effects besides anything else would be amazing.
I can't understand it!
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
I didn't think the ships look dated at all, and do you really expect every ship out there to be state of the art? Look out on the street and see how many cars older than 10 years are out there =p
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
The reason the ships don't look state of the art is because these people live out on the edge of civilisation. They're poor. They can't afford to buy a brand new ship, and they can't afford to give it a wash and wax after every re-entry. Go to any average farm and you'll likely see dirty, used tractors just like the hover sled thing they had. The Alliance ships do look clean and flash, because the Alliance is absurdly rich.

Now that you've seen the movie, I would suggest seeing the episode Out of Gas...that may give you insight into Firefly in general.

Jake
• MartianDustMartianDust Elite Ranger
Ok I agree with you that they can't afford it but honestly that yellow tractor thing looks impossible to lift off the ground! And in the future I doubt that the poorer ppl will have something like that if spaceships etc come about. Still never know I suppose.

Freejack I got no idea when any ep is on.

• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Even in the lowest income levels in America, people can still get access to used, barely working deathtraps-on-wheels from the 60's, 70's, and 80's if they really have the need for a car. I doubt that 100 years ago, many people would have considered cars being so accessible. That's how I see things having worked out in Firefly. It's old tech, and it's cheap because the higher levels of society have abandoned it for newer gear, perhaps because it's old or perhaps because it's simply not safe enough for continued use, but the point is that it's cheap enough such that those who want it can get it.

Also, they are not in syndication anymore. However, your local Blockbuster/Hollywood Video/UK-equivalent rental outlet of choice very likely carries the season box set. I suggest renting it, or hell, buying for the whole US$38 it often goes for.
