European Football Question

I was watching a segment on HBO's "Real Sports" the other day that delt with racism in European Football (soccer to us Americans). They claimed that games in which black players are present, bannanas and "monkey chants" are thrown at them. Does this happen often in Europe, or did they just exaggerate the problem? Furthermore, is it just limited to certain countries and / or the "cheap seats" or is it everywhere?

Now, I am well aware of racism in the United States so I am not passing judgement on Europeans. I'm just curious. To be honest I was stunned when I saw the segment which is why I had to ask.

Rioting seems to be monopoly of fans of few teams.

And most often color doesn't have anything to do with those fights, they tend to cross swords with fans of other teams, no matter what color.

Almost never heard about it. Mostly these things happens because the supporters of the other team hates the other team, and I suppose it is easier to attack the ones that differs from the rest of the players on the team, and often these players are really good too.

So no, it is not common I would say.
  • RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
I have to say, that's the first time i heard of something like that....

im sorry to say its a old news to me. that sort of racism is not altogether uncommon in football in the UK, I know some of my 'friends' partake of that at games.

personally i cant stand football. far too over rated as a game

It has. I have been so busy with school lately that I've had little time for anything else. I'm finishing up my BA and now I'm applying to grad school. But, it's nice to be missed. Thanks!

That's unfortunate... even if it is limited. For as much racism as their is in the US, I couldn't imagine people throwing bananas. Oh well... I guess their is no hope for some people.
