Yeah, unbuckle your belt, get out your seat and head for the door, all the while hoping that the craft stays together and righted enough for you to make it to the exit.
The author has a point that an escape system would not have been likely to save the individuals on Columbia, since any escape system would have been thrust into the same violent environment of re-entry. The method of escape there is to prevent or fix the problem in the first place.
