Isn't modern technology amazing?
Biggles

in Zocalo v2.0
You build a metal capsule. You stuff it with a weird gel. You put a drogue parachute on the back above a larger main parachute, various sensors, and complex electronics. Then you fire it off into space attached to a main space craft on top of a rocket, where it gets blasted with solar radiation, intra and interstellar particles, and freezing temperatures for seven years. Not to mention flying through a comet's tail.
After seven years of travelling in this horrible and very electronics-unfriendly environment, you throw it back at the Earth at 29,000mph, relying on the parachutes and sensors and electronics that have sat packed away for all that time to slow it down to 10mph. And it all works like clockwork.

As is Spaceship One, an attempt to open space to the (rich) public.
I hope we'll go back to the Moon and to Mars in our lifetimes.
[B]Yes it is. The rovers on Mars are also an amazing technological achievement in space exploration.

Not even "rich" rich folk. At $100k-500K a flight, it opens spaceflight up to the "not-quite-so-fabulously wealthy" and upper-upper-middle class folk with money to burn. It's the same group of people who are buying things like the Maserati Quattroporte and Bentley Continental GT or spend a good pile of money on a short luxury vacation.
