Came across Lee's website today...

To think I sat in a cubical on the other side of the wall from greatness!

I just got the DVD boxset of Firefly in the mail last week and I must say it's a great show. The mixing of Western lore and SciFi is a bit odd at first but the cast and the writing are great.

The SFX and the 3D graphics are top notch and the spaceships are quite unusual. Some inspiration was taken from movies like Star Wars (sharp edged alliance ships) and Babylon 5 (organic look of Serenity).

Too bad it got cancelled. I guess it wasn't PC enough. That does explain the longevity of Star Trek.

I look forward to the movie too. :)
  • I wasn't very impressed by Firefly. I don't get why everyone makes such a big deal about it.

"Wasn't PC enough?" I'll ride right on past my issues with the concept of "Political Correctness," and just point out that Firefly was commissioned, and aired by, Fox. Fox, for God's sake!

The last reason Fox would cancel a show is that it wasn't touchy-feely fluffy niceness.

Please note that family guy was cancelled multiple times.

And that World's Wildest Police Chases is not violating the "PC Directive" since it upholds the law and doesn't toss race into it. Just creates a sterile "Good vs. Evil" environment where good always wins.

And Reality TV is damned PC. They always have a perfect character balance (one from each major stereotype to suit the show's needs)

And Married: With Children was an anomaly. Being a very popular show amongst a lineup of...well..shit, they couldn't risk cancelling it. Nor would they want to. :p

its subjective, like all shows. for me it had a couple of long story arcs, good effects, a humourous style and actors that portrayed their characters well in a setting that appealed to me.

I like the new B.G series too but prefer firefly because of the humour.

The humour is the reason my wife loves Firefly, but she doesn't like BSG because she feels it takes itself too seriously.

it does a very good job of depicting the desparate position they are in and so I guess it can't relieve that sense of pressure with levity too often

That I do understand, and in BSG's case it would cheapen the show to have too much to have an excessive amount of humor.

One of the things I also liked about Firefly, was this idea of regression of technology, that at some point, technology becomes so intertwined in our society that we begin to move backwards, especially when the environment is not terribly condusive to that tech.
