Pentium... Schmentium: Decoding CPU Names

Not like I wouldn't have wanted someone to put heads of marketing clowns to plate for a longer time.
Could you tell me which processors you offer for this notebook," I recently asked a direct sales rep for one of the large PC manufacturers in this country. A simple question for a simple answer, one would think. Not so in this case: "It's a Centrino," the rep told me. After clearing up that Centrino is not a processor, the rep insisted that there is only one version of the Pentium M processor offered by Intel. Being told that there are in fact 75 (!) different packages of Pentium M processors available at this time left the rep speechless.
Reading through Intel's processor line-up today is as easy as navigating through a corn maze. The product portfolio gets more confusing and less transparent year after year, with yet another Intel marketing masterpiece due next January.
AMD will be my next CPU :D
The models with higher numerical value in a given series may not actually be faster (or even better) than the lower numbered ones.
I eventually gave up and bought a venice-core Athlon 64 3500+. It worked and everyone is happy. It also cost less and, as far as I can tell, is faster than the only P4 we had been able to pin down.
I gave 'em a chance! ;)

hmph...if you buy from pc world you get all you deserve IMO:rolleyes:
What cracks me up about those adverts is that right after they say...
"With an Intel Pentium 4 Processor..."
...the screen cuts to the monitor which plays the "do do do doo!" tune and the Pentium graphic, as if that one little act makes the product itself beyond reproach!
I bought my machine from Evesham technology, and it's wonderful; but next time, I'll have a friend custom build it. That's the way to go. :)
I custom build all my computers, but that's mostly because I enjoy putting computers together. :)
Do you wear glasses and shout "glaven!" a lot as well? ;)
Just kidding mate, one of my friends custom builds computers for a hobby as well, and has promised to overhaul my old machine at some point. Some of the stuff he talks about is frankly mind-boggling... On that note, one thing that strikes about Firstones is the inordinate proportion of people with high technological competence. Whenever I've had a problem with my machine, I just come right here, and bob's your uncle! Sorted! :)

all of our 30 pc's at work are custom built, makes for a fun afternoon upgrading them, lol
ROTFL!
For desktops definatly the way to go is an AMD cpu.
As for building your own, I figured everybody here at FO would, were all geeks right? ;)
I dont think the entire family has had a factory assembled computer since 1989 when we got a gateway.
My current Machine uses a Genuine Intel (tm) Schmentium 5 Pro Duo M.
