I am sorta curious if they have a story planned out till the end or is really developed per season. Will they ever get to Earth or close to it? Will it be present day or Earth of the future?
Spoiler: I actually thought this last episode was rather weak. The editing was piss poor, and the constant re-use of the exact same shots and exact same footage made the whole episode feel empty. And on top of that, the entire cast felt like they were barely trying.
As a half-hour story or a B-plot, this would have been fine, but an ace fighter is far from a new concept and was poorly executed here. It just felt so unneeded and in terms of how it was executed within the show's universe, was piss-poor planning. Starbuck has shown a good deal more strategic and tactical talent in the past. While her piloting skills were demonstrated somewhat effectively, I was left unsatisfied by the overall stupidity of risking the loss of *two* of the better pilots in a risky scenario. I mean, they said Scar had quite a reputation going, and I suspect he took many lives. It just seems dumb to only send out two and not plan for alternative possibilities, or simply a more traditional bait 'n draw method.
My favorite example of this specific style of story: Space: Above and Beyond: The Angriest Angel. I was genuinely interested in the character's motivations, and not only that, the Ace fighter, Chiggy Von Richtoven, was introduced early enough for his own mythology to grow substantially and make *his* death something to sympathize with.
But It's like saying "Cold Front" and that other time travel timesphere episode with archer losing his memory made up for countless other bad ones. Well, maybe not even that. It's more like saying...those slightly less dumb episode on enterprise somehow became watchable because they were less bad. It was still trash.
That is unduly harsh. Revelations was bad. Black Market was unmitigated trash. Scar was... not very good. Resurrection Ship is still possibly the best I've ever seen American television at, however, so they better get their shit together for the rest of the series.
I still worry for the future of the show. From the interviews, blogs, etc. I've read and listened to, it genuinely seems like there is no long-term plan for where they're going to take the story and when. It's just been an (up until now) lucky sequence of good episodes, and so now that there's no real plan and the universe is firmly established...the writers appear to be at a loss for where to go. I genuinely hope the show doesn't go past three seasons. It feels like it needs to begin the winding down process soon and needs to start establishing plot threads which will either smoothly bring the show to a close, or allow for some transition into a more influential story arc. Rumors are suggesting that we may just get that in the season closer, but we'll just have to wait to find out how things will flesh out.

They have a story planned out but apparently its in pretty broad strokes which means a lot of details are not set. They just sort of go with the flow. This has worked very well for a few episodes because it keeps the writers from being restricted by a lot of details. The problem is that this way they can also accidentally write themselves into a corner since there's no real bible. We know the cylons have a plan. My question is does Ron Moore have one?
Scar was not one of the seasons best but it was one of the better ones so far and shows the season is kind of getting back on its feet after the last two weak episodes. Forget the whole scar theme. I think its the Apollo/Starbuck scenes that really made this epidode work. The dynamic between those two characters I always find very good. There's just something very natural about the fucked up relationship between those two.

The way I see it you need to take a big step back and look at the big picture. Weaker episodes are bound to happen at some point in ANY show. The show has been on a 20+ episode streak from the begining without a truly weak episode. Season 1 IMO is a genuine masterpiece. A bad episode here and there is no big deal. People really bitch too much some times. Even B5 which I consider the standard by which all other shows are measured has a good 20% of the episodes that can be written off as irrelevant garbage in comparison to the rest. There were a lot of genuinely crap episodes as well as decent episodes that really had no significant relevance to advancing the shows plot or characters. That said I'll cut BSG some slack. The show is still not anywhere close to loosing track.
I've shown the episodes to other friends and watched through them as a result from the beginning a few times. It has been pretty interesting seeing other peoples reaction and redigesting everything over again. Putting things into perspective some of the weaker episodes are still really good. Its just the bar has been set so high by some of them its hard to always live up to expectations. 13 IMO is the weakest episode. 14 has been the most controversial. Its split right down the middle of those who hate it or loved it.

I would buy the sets myself but that screw up with B5 on the menu backgrounds makes me think twice about doing so... maybe they will fix it for a fresh production run.
Its just wrong! I would have expected a nice big image of their carrier or the fighter squadron themselves. Every time I'd load the disc and see the image I'd just say "why??".
Its like season 5 of b5's menus suddenly have the Enterprise E on it. It would be like "wtf????!!!!"
Anyway we're going off on a sci fi herring here. Back to BSG! Last epsiode was not bad. Not amazing or anything.
One thing bugged me about that episode. Ok Scar got nailed a few times. So that means he'd have to get a new ship. From the looks of his it has been through many dog fights. So does that mean when he died before they gave him a new fighter and then put some "scars" on it? They did seem to focus on the battle damage on his hull.
Spoiler: The scars are probably damage obtained during the battle to take out the ressurrection ship, or afterwards when they had no means of repairing the damage or giving him a new "body",
Spoiler: The scarring actually looked like he had a custom camo job done to hide in the asteroid field. Its alway tradition for the top gun to have a custom paintjob anyway. :D
Spoiler: Didn't anyone notice that the real scar was the one in Starbucks psyche? Her inability to relate closely to anyone anymore due to the past injuries? And that this episode shows the beginning of the healing for that? The removal of the Scar/scar was intentional symbolism.

Spoiler: I actually felt sorry for Commander Garner at the end of the episode. By the way, I wonder how Colonel Tigh will react to Adama being promoted over his head?
