The Site Moving? Well, yeah!

Well, after some final deliberations in IRC and repeated talks over the last couple of months, the administration has come to the decision that it's going to drop our long-time host RadiusCo Web and switch to DreamHost, with the site's content and configuration likely being ported to the new server and stress-tested completely behind the scenes, such that when the domain transfer completes, everything will just magically work!

With this in mind, we've started a donation drive for the plan which, for those needing to know, is going to be a two-year prepayment at US$7.95 per month, totalling to US$190.80 for the period. To donate, simply click on the magical donation bar up top, and it'll go! once we reach the goal, we'll purchase the new plan and start the transfer of content, and eventually moving the databases and related content over, followed by the domain.

If you have any comments or suggestions, just drop them in the usual place.

Just to emphasise a couple of things:

1. The new plan gives us 20GB of space (goes up another 160MB every week) and 1TB of bandwidth (goes up some absurd amount every week, as if that matters with having 1TB already), plus support for infinite domains and subdomains, and lots of other nifty stuff.
2. That's completely prepaid for 2 years! No more payments necessary to keep the site running for 2 whole years!

Though, we'd gladly accept donations. having extra money around is always nic,e as it allows for such things as software updates (like this forum) and service upgrades as needed (though I highly doubt we will need anything of that sort)
• Tossed in a couple cents. :)

Pushed the progress bar onward with a whoppin' 2,xx percent. :D
• I moved it a whopping 3.xx percent! Yay!

But I'm the one who donated first...an entire 5.xx percent :)

Whatever we can think of. :) It's the cheapest plan, so there's no getting less bandwidth.

Plus, it's already FAR above what we currently use...so...

I doubt we'll ever find a way to fill it, but that's good. I like a margin of safety.

With it, perhaps we can get some interesting streaming media or more graphically intensive services going. Likely, it'll go to the mods and the quietly mentioned B5 community archival attempt.

No I'm not offering to build it :P

Space for a home brew FO game project?

:)

I'll try and scrape up some cash to throw into paypal, and then send it over...

I'd like to contribute, but I won't use Paypal's contract policies. I have an account, but I refuse to actually give money to Paypal anymore becuase they are a bank without the banking protections that normally exist.

If you can provide another way to donate, I'll send $20.

RC, bug me on #Firstones about it. Maybe we can work something out.

We do have the Civ IV mod that we can move *shifty eyes at sanfam*
And if we were to create a graphical MOD, well jack can model/texture and Biggles can code! :)

Another idea is to create a music repository like b5music was. We got some great fanmade stuff to put on there.

MusicOfB5 is one of the sites that I do want to attempt to replicate. It's part of the reason I've been trying to get in contact with Mr. Franke. The loss of that site was a huge blow to the community. And as time goes on, more fanpages will fall off the internet as their owners move on/grow up/forget about them.

I don't f*@#ing want this to happen to what's left of B5. That's my stance, at least ;)

I wonder if perhaps some arrangements could be made to offer up more music than was originally on MusicOfB5, since many of the CDs are now way out of print and long since sold off...
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
Well I have a buch of B5 mp3 and oggs. If our community can throw together what we have we would probably end up with more anyways. Those of us with CDs (I have SiL) could also do some high quality rips as well.

And don't forget we can give all members a @firstones.com jabber account!

The biggest problem would be the licensing. MusicOfB5 had agreed with Franke or Sonic Images to distribute key tracks in a certain manner such that they would only cover select portions of the released soundtrack cds. My hope is that we could capitalize on the fact that many of thecd CDs are either unavailable or simply so hard to find that either they could be put online for free.
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
Good point, the only problem is, as we you well know, is that Franke is like.... vanished.

I may have a means to get a direct line with hom, so I'll probably be persuing that route.

And so with the funds raised, we've bought the space...and another domain for the wiki.

Hey Sanfam, Ive got some questions for you about DreamHost.

Ive got my site hosted over at Infinology and have considered possibly going to dreamhost. Infinology isnt neccesarrily bad, I have had maybe 3-4 server outtages lasting more than a day in 3 years, support is ok, and despite the Radius Co guy trying to tell me that they are overselling their storage space and server traffic, we have started to get very close to filling our 9GB and used (i think) 46 of our 50GB per month of traffic without interuption. (ftp stuff)

Anyways, some friends pointed me twords dreamhost and I have read some reviews. Generally when I get online to read a review I look soley at the bad ones. I get a better idea of what the problem is, usually you can tell if its just some idiot that doesnt know how to use what he has but anyways...

Several reviews with Dreamhost site bad customer service after you become an established customer, increasing outage times and significantly slower performance the more sites they take, and several well written bad reviews explaining how service has taken a sharp drop with their ever increasing sales. Dreamhosts makes mention of the fact that they just hosted their 100k site. Thats a lot, but people are saying that its too much too fast and the service side of the company cant keep up with the marketing departments claims.

Im guessing firstones hasnt officially moved yet, but you probably have your dreamhost account paid for and have access to your new control panel, is it any good. Are you getting a good vibe from this company and do you think its really that good a host??

The fact that they let you host unlimited domains also begs the question.... Are there people out there abusing the system and two seperate people are hosting 2 seperate sites under the one account??

How does that effect a shared server? Slower response? More problems?

Let me know please
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
While my site consists of more than a blog (also excuse my spelling as I'm intoxicated and had a fight tonight), I've been quite happy with their service, as any downtimes are quickly reported via email if you sign up for is or an external site with an rss feed. All my questions have been answered in less that 24 hours, and they cant do nothing for how i'm able to screw up my relationshipw. fuck them all.

i need help. god damn it i want this to work out why why do you all bloody care anyways? yah its the internet so i can ramble

Basically, I'm testing the moving of site content over to dreamhost on a selective basis. My overall impression of things thus far are "neutral", as I've found aspects which are both positive, negative, and just plain unimportant. A better person to ask would be biggles.

The possibility still exists that we won't complete the move and will just stay at RadiusCo, but whether or not this will happen, I cannot say just yet. Still need more time. Quite honestly, I do not want to even consider moving any of the site. It's just too much of a pain in the ass. I've still got the 97-day money back policy to fall onto if I do not feel it is satisfactory.

I've read reviews, and the problem is that while there are negative reviews from larger sites, there are also positive reviews from just as many who have not experienced slowdowns of any sort. This seems to indicate either that users might just not know what they're posting, or that it's the "luck of the draw" (everything depending on what server you get shoved on)

I'm hoping biggles will chime in here with his experience thus far.
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
A better person to ask would be Worf. ;) His site is significantly larger than mine. I've not had any problems with them, though. My site is fast enough for me, it's significantly faster than where it used to be hosted, and the Dreamhost support has been great, although I haven't had to ask them anything yet.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
I haven't had any problems with my site, at least not as far as I've noticed...so anything that came up must have been fixed very quickly.

I've not had any complaints either.

My site isn't that big, a few pages and a number of videos...but there's been quite a lot of traffic.

Now for some stats:

I've had over 12000 downloads in the last year.

My monthly bandwidth useage is around 13gb.

And I'm currently using just under 3gb of space.

Worf

When I do read reviews, I try to take into account the level of the user usually by writing style, or knowledge of what they are writing, if you (not to use this pun too literally) read between the lines, you can weed out the bullshit.

Without drifting too far off the subject and just using this as a reference.. Wife and I looked at some reviews for those Dyson Vaccumes to replace our piece of shit dirt devil, one review mentioned his was broken from the first time he turned it on, it made a loud grinding sound that sounds like plastic gears being stripped. Well when we demod a unit it took us about 15 seconds to figure out, the guy was a moron. It does grind if you shove down on it to tilt the handle backwards, there is no "button" it just has a catch spot to keep it upright, lean the handle back and use your foot to break the catch, unlike other uprights that force you to actually push a button with your foot to release a latch. If you push the dyson to the floor, it grinds. Idiot didnt read the directions.

So likeI said, I do take reviews with a grain of salt. I did notice plenty of glowing reviews, I just like to do my research. I found out my billing cycle is actually in March so I have more time than I thought. I may experiment knowing I have that much time. Do what your doing and get an account and use my 97 day return time...

not bad

So far I would have to say I am quite impressed. Its definately easier to use than my other host.

On top of everything else thats going on, our website forums were recently hacked, pretty bad too, we have about 4 days of downtime. So I started looking into that phpBB message board, I found it excrutiatingly light on options, but found plenty of mods to fix it.

I also found a converter to take my ikonboard posts and import them into a new phpBB message board. It was actually pretty easy to do, and worked rather well.

I created a test forum just to start and have my users trying to abuse it to see what they think of it. Since I know how to to do the import now, they are loving it.

Just wondering how its coming on your end San?

Progress is slow. There's just so many little things to change as the site is being moved over. It's a lot more frustrating than originally intended and is making the prospect of staying quite appealing.
