Hypotethical (or some such) question about travel to USA.

Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
Orlandooo... ooorlandoo...

That's the place with the disneyland I reckon.

Hmm... Now, if I were to travel there for a week or two in april, would I need a visa for it? My passport is valid until 2009..

Is it wacky?

It is indeed very wacky.

You don't need a visa, because Finland is a member of the visa waiver program. You need a machine-readable passport (if your passport has some blocky text and numbers on the bottom of the page, it's machine-readable).

Arriving in the US, you just fill out an I-94W which is a green form which they'll either give to you on the plane or when entering the immigration area.

And remember to return the little green slip when you leave, otherwise you'll be listed as overstay and might have trouble on your next visit. I forgot on my last transit through LA :p

jaa...

I'm on two minds about it..

Either I go to Thailand to celebrate my 23rd birthday (got the tickets already, but with option to change without losing 'em.. paid 20 euros extra for that).

And cuz it seems that I've broken up, or she has, or we have?

Anyway.. my friend who is working at the disneyland has invited me there.. and hey.. half-price inside and prolly some free rides? What the hell..

What I remember of it, it is wacky, yes. Also, check out cape kennedy.

Point of clarification:
DisneyLAND is in California, DisneyWORLD is in Florida. Just wanted to make sure you met your friend on the right coast. ;)

Yes its Disney World, its huge, in Orlando Florida, and most importantly, if you go there, its clear on the other side of the continent from me ;)

If you go to disney in Orlando, I really do suggest taking a day to head over to the Kennedy Space Center, its about an hour outside of Orlando and if you are at all into space and the space programs, worth every minute.

I am.. and into naked space prostitutes..

But some things you people here have talked about have made me think..

and hell! I didnt even know it was close until you mentioned it here.. all of you.

Hmm.. now, if i went there for a week.. or two.. should have plenty of time for both? Maybe more than once so can see all that interests me?

What are the main interest points there that I should visit and see?
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
Yes, a week should be more than enough for both.

Mind you, we went to Disneyworld one day, Cape Kennedy one, Bush Gardens one and Epcot Center one. Cape Kennedy are the ones I remember most, but if you really want to see Disneyworld one day is of course, not enough..

Jeez, it just struck me that Ive been to St. Petersburg on two continents..

You could spend a month at disney and not see everything, Lol, but Kennedy can be done in a day, although if you validate your entry you get 2 days for the price of one.
• Disney....ugh.

I live in Florida, St. Augustine specifically.

Disney = expencive. They just raised prices AGAIN.

Theres a tip though, check area gas stations, more often then not, you can get a discount of some sort, purchasing your tickets there, AND skip the insane lines.

Kennedy is VERY MUCH worth the time. As is Busch Gardens if you like roller coasters.

You need about a day for Disney itself, and a day for Kennedy Space Center.

If you like history, there is alot in St. Augustine to see, and dirt cheap in compareson. (Hey, I can get you into some places you normally couldn't go at the Ponce de Leon campus, as a student there) The downtown/fort was built mid 1500s, soo...

Disney's daily rates an't bad, IF you buy a weeks worth at a time, lol, they really try and get you to stay a while, it was like $80/person if you jsut wanted one day, but if you wanted 7 days, they daily cost dropped to like $30/person.

thats why we ended up at kennedy instead. i've been to Disney/Epcot (although not since 1982) and i'd never been to Kennedy.

Quite, that was a tad reckless of me...

Personally, I'd love to visit New York, some of the Art Deco architecture over there is beautiful. On that note, Washington DC would be fantastic as well, I've always wanted to see the Lincoln memorial. It's a shame the plane fares over there have rocketted in recent years.
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
The Chrysler building is one of my favourite buildings. ;)

Go to New York. Its definitely worth it. It was like being in wonderland for me. :)
• Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
Yea.. but I there's something in Orlando that is even better than disneyworld or cape kennedy..

Definately. I love the eagle-head and hub-ornament "gargoyles" which odorn the exterior. Van Alen was a genius. The Empire State would also be a must as well. *Searches web* Ahh, god-bless Wikipedia external links...

• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
Ive never been much for the Empire State. The General Elecric building was a new find for me though *drools*

There were some great Arct Deco (or Art Moderne as they call it in Russia) buildings in St. Petersburg too. But no Skyscrapers. They werent allowed to build higher buildings than the streets were wide in the inner city. Gave for a magnificent feeling. Every "Prospect" is a parade street! :)

Oh, and the Woolworth building is also a treat!

Quite! We touched on Art Moderne during the Communist Russia module of my history course at college. Wasn't Moscow University Art Deco/Art modern? (I pointed this out in class when a slide of the building came up.) Beautiful piece of architecture. There are also a good few buildings in London that I have to visit again; especially one on the bank of the Thames which has a central clock tower cornered with monk-like robed figures. Still don't know what it's called...

Art Deco stuff is very cool, every time a see Deco style I always get an image of a streamlined steam locomotive in my head. I especially like the waterfall furnature of the same period.

I'm also a big fan of Arts & Crafts, which is somewhat a predecessor to Art Deco. I really designers such as Stickney and Greene & Greene, and to a lesser extend Frank Loyd Wright, though his designs where a bit too exaggerated for my taste.

There were too many buildings for me to catch in one trip. But Moscow university is in Moscow isnt it? Former KGB headquarters IIRC?

Its a shame, it costs about $20 for me to go to London, and I havent been there once. :(

If and when I design a house, I will design it in a cross between Jugend (Art Noveau) and Art Deco. The Interior will be a mix between Jugend and Minimalism.

(F.Y.I. Favourite artists are Gaudi, Mucha, Monet, Dali and Giger)

Here's a picture of the old girl. She conforms to the tradition Deco step-up architectural configuration. (Not sure of its use as KGB HQ, though...)

London's a great city to visit, I'm sure the MOD building is Art Deco as well as an old telephone exchange/post office close to the central coach station. (Featuring two rather hunky Apollo-esque figures supporting a globe over the main entrance.) Lots of fantastic stuff to see from an architectural standpoint. ;)

Saying that, I'm not that fond of Art Deco as a style of interior design; my love for it only extends to architecture. My parents have our Victorian semi done up in contemporary style for much of downstairs. I'm very fond of it. Decedent, but cosy. I'm fond of post modernism as well; lots of white interiors and airy spaces. :)

When we still lived in NYC, after my wife no longer worked at the world trade center (for obvious reasons) she ended up working at a law firm almost driectly across the street from the Chrysler building, getting to look up at that every day is awseome, it really is a great feat building.

Another great one in NYC is downtown, the Woolworth building, great old Freizes and Facades, they dont make buildings like that anymore,

Exactly, that's what I love so much about Art Deco, the architecture tells you what the building's all about. For example, there's a Mercedes dealership in Bristol which dates back at least to the 1920s. The building itself is classical art deco and features friezes of car wheels on either side of the four pillars that corner the building. I might try and get a photo at some point.

You guys should visit Napier. The entire town is Art Deco (read the tourism section).

Miami is also a great place to go for Art Deco buidings,.

we've also got a movie theatre here in town, that was built in 1932, and is still all original Deco (http://www.criteriontheater.com/) you can't really tell from the pics on the site, If i get a chance since i know the owner, i'll ask if he'd mind my taking some pics. its a brilliant theatre.
• Thanks for the link, Biggles. (Yet another reason to visit NZ!) :)

Entil'Zha, piccies would be awesome mate. I'm sure I took a few myself of noable buildins that caught my eye the last time I went to London a few years back. I'll trawl around on the old PC and see if I can find any...
