Can anyone recommend a good dvd codec?

I just bought a new dvd burner for my desktop. Drivers all installed fine, just need a decoder to playback dvd disks. Finding one that isn't trialware and doesn't spam me with browser ads is proving tougher than I thought... can anyone offer any recommendations?
