Experiences with Frostbite?

So hmm I've been wondering about frostbite any of ya lost limbs from such coldness?

I've been wondering other than gloves & hot water what is a natural protector from cold?

Never actually lost anything, but on me' army days really went through some darn cold training camps. Hot Metal might want to concur here, if he'd like to step outside the closet.

I'd say that the best natural protection from cold is the proper usage of your own body heat. Movement to keep your surface circulation in motion and keeping you warm. Legs and feet are hard to keep warm without perpetual motion, but hands are rather easy if you have a jacket: crossing your arms over your chest and putting your hands (without gloves) in your armpits is just about the best way I know to get 'em defrosted. :p

Also, if you happen to have some nice broad with you when you plan to freeze to death, sharing body heat is another fine way to endure the cold. Getting together naked in a sleeping bag on a cold night is just about the only source of warmth you'll require in order to survive. And to sweat your ass off, I reckon. :) Never tried it in a sleeping bag but if a mere blanket suffices, how about a closed baggie? :p

    Skin sauna!
  • Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
I had a frostbite in one winter camp once too, and almost had to be evacuated (wouldnt have minded that at all, no sirree...)
  • mittins are better then gloves,
    my 1/2 cent worth.

Your hands become useless when wearing them but that I guess is the unavoidable point.

So just take as much clothes as you can find from closet... Let's say something like four/five layers under thick overall. Then you have to just warm hands occasionally.

Also, if you start sweating, take off some clothes. Sweat can be hazardous at low temperatures.

    And, dont rub frostbite.

Frostbite is a nasty thing. I got mild frostbite two winters ago when I was cleaning my car off. the snow kept on covering it up due to the high winds, and so it took me about 30 minutes to get it anywhere near clean enough to move. Poor thing almost didn't start, either.
