Not huge, it takes forever to load on this computer, so its not really practical for a pbem game.

I'm up for it!

When they finally come out with a proper nodvd crack, I'll let you guys know.

Crackers these days are so fucking lazy. Back in the day, this would never have been tolerated.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Or you could buy the game. :p And it's not laziness. Security systems and anti-copy protection is very sophisticated these days. It's a hard thing to break.
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
Civ IV has a very sophisticated system and I have trouble running it with no cd half the time. Sanfam what civ do you want?
• ArethusaArethusa Universal Cathode
Civ 4's very sophisticated system is just Safedisk 4. Black and White 2 used the same and it got cracked well within a week of its release. This is pure laziness.

I refuse to buy it due to its release (I do no purchase half baked games, and I will wait until there is at lease a proper patch), but primarily due to its DRM. This isn't as bad as Half-Life 2, but I refuse to pay $50 for a game that I have no assurance will actually function at all, let alone half the time as I've seen reported all over the place. My alternative is to buy or download the game and go through a ridiculous process of running antiblaxx and sd4hide and mounting images, which is obscenely complex. So, for now, I'll hold off until there's a proper crack.

Besides, I would point out that using cracks by no means indicates that I did not purchase the game. I don't really buy games anymore, as I don't really find many are worth my attention, but I've used cracks on stuff I've bought before.
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
If you refuse to buy it for whatever reason, that doesn't mean you still have the right to play it and justify pirating it. If you don't like the DRM, simply don't play the game. If you want to play it, buy it. If it doesn't work when you've bought it, then use cracks or take it back and get a refund.

Neither is "I don't think it's worth buying" justification for pirating a game. If you want to play it, then clearly it's worth something to you. If it's too expensive now, wait till it gets cheaper, and that doesn't mean pirate it now, play it now, buy it later.

I never claimed a justification for copyright infringement. But I do find it is unfairly demonized with scary words like 'theft' and 'piracy.' It isn't theft, and it sure as hell isn't actual piracy.
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
Well, people just don't like long names for things. :) Whether you like it or not, copyright infringement is now known as piracy. Whether or not it's legally theft depends on the laws of the country (in the UK it is while in the USA it isn't, as I recall). Either way, if you copy software without compensating the producers then it's hardly "unfair" to classify that as theft or similar, whether you would have bought it otherwise or not.

Biggles you up for it?
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
Not yet. Need to finish my first game, then read the manual, then play a huge map game. :)
• Well thats gonna take you about a week or 24-48 game hours.
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
More than that, probably.
• so is this FFA or are we making teams here.

I'm fully aware of SafeDisc4's wide use, and that it was cracked for B&W2 (and am glad that it's not starforce :D), but it's still a serious piece of software that can be well integrated into the code if a developer wants to.

There are ways around it, but Hell if I'm going to suggest them. Buy the game, play it from the disc and give in to the awesomeness that is Civ 4 :D I see no reason to ever remove it from the drive, either ;)
• I think I might pick up the game just for a FirstOnes PBeM game, but no doubt I'll be completely worthless. Hopefully I can play some games between rounds and re-learn everything. :)

If I do pick it up, and if things haven't changed too much, I'll probably play Romans or Greeks.
• Damn, Civ 4 sounds so feakin cool. Wish i hadn't spent all my money on Quake 4 and F.E.A.R. thinking, "oh well, civ3 will be enouhg for me for now." bah....

Anyway, I just had a question, whats a PBeM game?

I'm aware of the ways around them. I refuse to engage sd4hide, antiblaxx, and mounted mini images, because that is insane.

Anyway, I may consider it, but cash is extremely tight for me right now.

so we can either do teams in the following way:

*Free For All
*2-3 teams humans only (ie 2 or 3 people on a team)
*All humans on one team and an equal number of AIs on other team

Suggested Map settings

Earth map
Standard or Small terra map
Standard or Small balanced map
Ice age if we are adventuous

Climate and such for terra and balanced will be standard

In addition I will have more players than normally suggested for the given map size, to accelerate contact.

Biggles, you can play both the pbem and your normal game at the same time. This is just a fun game, I'm not going to take it too seriously (like some do on the fan sites, sheesh!)
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
How long is the game likely to take?
• WORFWORF The Burninator
We might be playing Civ5 at the same time ;)

Worf
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
I'd like to place dibs on...THE OTTOMANS! MUWAHAHAHA

Or...Oh, so many civs! WHO DO I CHOOSE?!

I can be The Ottomans, or The Americans, or...or...or....EGADS, I don't know. Pick me a random race. I don't haveenough experience with the majority of them yet to decide.
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
Current List:

croxis: Egyptions
Sanfam: Ottomans
the exile: Romans
Cabl3: Mongols
Worf: Russian

Biggles: we could to 3 vs 3 if you join ;)

Otherwise FFA or 5humans vs 5 AIs seems good.

Post what difficulty you can play at as well.
• I don't like the idea of teams, as I will no doubt be the primary reason for my faction's defeat. FFA sounds good to me. :)
