I came across this today
rcmodels
Ranger
in Zocalo v2.0
I was looking around for stuff on the next generation of consoles and I came upon a random proposal for what sounds like an open source console. Seems kinda strange. What do you all think?
Background:
The inspiration for this project was born out of a longing for a gaming experience that was not based around milking the market for money, as is seen today from the eyes of console manufacturers and massive corporate game publishers. Today's market is dominated by a relatively small but incredibly wealthy group of companies. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo do not dominate the console market, but rather they are the market. These companies place requirements on developers requiring games to meet certain graphical requirements or work exclusively on their systems using proprietary formats. Often these limitations force small companies with brilliant ideas out of business or force them to work on less than desirable products for the money. Publishers such as EA and Ubisoft operate with little regard to their employees or their customers, producing games from a tried and proven mold guarantied to garner large profits. This is seen best in the first person shooter market. Fun is not dependent upon the best graphics engine. It is time to put the game back in video games.
Concept:
The goal of this project is to put console gaming in the hands of the gamer while at the same time decreasing the restrictions placed upon developers and encourage the independent development that has been stifled in todays market.
Implementation:
The creation of this console is to be done in a democratic fashion. This will be done by allowing any enthusiast to add his/her suggestions to the project. Eventually it is assumed that an optimum configuration (optimized for performance, ease of use, game development, cost efficiency, and the ability for upgrading) would be agreed upon by the community.
The Community:
The success or failure of this project will depend upon the community that embraces it. Without enthusiastic gamers, programmers, and engineers this project will not survive past this outline. It is crucial to have the support of developers throughout the design process. Both to create games but to help design this console to aid them in development by reducing or eliminating corporate red tape or certain requirements hindering to both creativity and production.
Initial Desired Features:
---This list is subject to change---
-----This list represents my desires and not those of the community----
Linux based operating system
Broadband connectivity for both distribution of software and game play
Mass storage device
Optical drive (format to be decided)
Ability to distribute/download software
Upgradeability
