Sci-Fi Movies

Ok, I'm studying for a test tomorrow, so I'm gonna make this short.

What are your favourite Sci-Fi movies and/or what do you recommend for someone that likes most branches of Sci-Fi, like space, future, aliens on earth etc etc.

Only ones I have seen are like, Star Wars, Fifth Element (yes, these kind of Sci-Fis too), Equilibirum, Dune...

Well... at least considering alien-side John Carpenter's The Thing is one the best ones, also it's effects look surprisingly good even today. (except one "painting background" scene)

    Alien I/II
    Outland
    Blade Runner
    Dune (The movie)

    Red Planet

The last 4 of which are under recognized in my opinion...
  • CurZCurZ Resident Hippy
Soldier? Are we talking the Kurt Russell movie?
  • MundaneMundane Elite Ranger
2001/2010? Two of the worst movies I've seen I think :)

I agree with JackN..I like Deep Impact and AI, Armageddon is shit though.

But I like The Postman too....
  • I like 2001, probably because I read the book first.

Well there's a lot I like but if I had to choose my absolute favorites:

    2001
    Alien
    Event Horizon
    Star Wars original trilogy
    Dune
    Stargate
Indiana Jones trilogy (can't believe no one has mentioned this)

Mundane, I'll have to disagree with on 2001. While 2010 was a fairly run-of-the-mill sci-fi movie, it was 2001 that set the benchmark for sci-fi movies to come later, and it is still a benchmark, that in terms of special effects, cinimatography and storytelling. A fast paced action movie it is not and Kubrick's methodical, specific storytelling is a much bigger reward for those who've read the book, but in the end there are many things that 2001 gets right, that most movies get wrong.

 2001 is one of the greatest, if not THE greatest Sci fi movie ever. If you don't like it because you didn't understand it, well you kind of aren't supposed to.
Besides without 2001 we wouldn't have the cool Babylon 5 space suits worn by Sinclair in the B4 episodes :D If you haven't noticed they are the same suits used in 2001.

Technically Apollo 13 is not Sci-fi. Its something that actually happened.

true, but it kind of fits with the genre...

Besides its a good movie, and if hasnt seen it, he should.

It's more scifi than the Indiana Jones movies. They, if anything, are fantasy. :) Also, Apollo 13 is a dramatisation so it's not all non-fiction. Of course, that's really splitting hairs. :D

Ah well, I think indy is kinda sci-fi with all the supernatural stuff and what not. Its also got stuff like that airplane in ROTLA which was fictional so there :P

Its drama but not sci-fi in anyway. I think its common for anything having to do with space to be considered sci-fi but in this case a rocket was actually built and that mission took place so its science fact :D
