And considering how terrible that game was...
[No flaming! - Mod]
Arethusa I don't like you. Your about as consistent as your menstrual cycle.
Tell me something how much of Pirates did you even play? I don't know about what you play but Pirates was one the best RTS I've played in a while despite no multiplayer. If you can give me on reason why it sucked then go on.
Otherwise don't talk shit about a game you probably played for 5 mins.
Civ 4 will be a huge leap thats why I preordered her. From the tech to the multiplay (what im looking forward to)
Im a little confused on the religion subject does it effect your culture?
I want!
Let me break this down.
The main navigation screen is quite basic. It's cartoony and has very little to do with anything actual navigation might be like, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but does not make for a particularly deep or interesting experience. Mostly, once you figure it out in about 30 seconds or less, you'll find it enourmously tedious, because long distances have to be traversed manually and rarely require any more interaction from you but a single click to get going.
The trade portion of the game is equally simple. It's just a matter of buying high at a preset location and selling low at another. Repeat ad nauseum. There are maybe eight total commodities to do this with, and it's never more complex than playing Drug Trader.
The combat is exceedingly simple as well. You control your ship with your mouse, and the entire game revolves around mouse steering to bring your broadsides to bear in order to unload one of three shot types (ball for range, grape for close in, and chain for crippling).
Once you ram the ship, you'll board, and the only thing that ever happens is fighting the captain of the opposing ship. You have three attacks and three blocks, and the entire fight is a matter of matching the proper attack to the proper block and hitting back before your opponent can do anything about it. Do that enough times and you'll knock your opponent unconscious or off the ship. It's always exactly the same.
The romance portion of the game revolves around playing a very simple and watered down version of DDR with whatever faceless governor's daughter happens to live in the town you're currently anchored at. Since they're all exactly the same, you can never really tell them apart. Doesn't really go anywhere, and playing DDR as a pirate is nauseatingly dull.
The last part of the game is land combat, which again devolves into three basic unit types, three types of ground, and maneuvering around that. As with everything else in the game, it's a slightly tarted up game of rock paper scissors.
And that's all. That's the entire game right there, except that while it's nothing but little flash game variations on rock paper scissors, it runs like complete crap.
;)
The game will be written entirely from scratch using flexible XML data files, as well as the Python scripting language. Boost.Python (this allows for seamless interoperability between C++ and the Python programming language) will be used as the interface layer between the C++ game code and Python. Python is used in the game for map generation, interface screens, game events, tools, tutorials, etc. If you want to see how this will affect customization of the game (or any other aspect relating to customization), look under “Customization Flexibility.” The new 3D engine will also allow for greater possibilities (find under “A New Expression”).

The Graphics Engine Civilization IV will be using is the NDL's Gamebryo 3D graphics engine. Firaxis' PC hit, Sid Meier's Pirates! also uses it.
And just because it looks like pirates doesn't mean it is pirates. Everything I've seen indicates that this will prolly be the best incarnation of Civilization. Don't worry, a babylon 5 mod wont be far behind
Too bad we can't get Marc Hudgins out here to weigh in...
;)
Wasn't he art lead, though? I wouldn't have thought that the art lead would have that much input into the game mechanics, and it's possible to have a beautiful game that has bad gameplay (see: most FPS games).

We received an email from Kelley Gilmore (marketing manager at Firaxis) regarding the French tech tree poster included in some copies of US Civ4:
2K Games has determined that a small number of units of Civilization IV incorrectly included the French Canadian tech tree poster due to an error at an assembly plant. They will definitely be replacing these at their cost and will have information on the Official Civ4 Site at www.civiv.com later today. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

Did Civ 1 molest you as a child or something? You seem to feel awfully strongly about this. ;)
