Hehe my grandmother is the coolest, into all the sci-fi and that. :D I also have my mother hooked on BSG, and we also watched all of DS9 and Voyager (Meh, it's a very womanly show Voyager). As for my dad, well, he just takes the piss out of anything remotely sci-fi these days, I wanna swat him most days. ;)
Nice the woman in your avatar your mom?

The big problem I've found seems to be getting past season 1. Having just done so with friends, it's proven to be really painful at times. The only thing that kept us going was the promise of better stuff. to come. I'm wondering if maybe there's a way to condense S1 in such a way as to half/quarter it, making it easier to swallow and still getting the viewer into the show. I know that the time spent on S1 really turned off at least two of these friends, but showing one In The Beginning was motivation enough to get through it.
Yes, I had to do this with my wife. After the first couple of episodes she was completely uninterested, so I skipped ahead to Signs and Portents, giving a quick summary of all the minor important stuff up to that point. After that she was hooked, to the point where she was having us watch almost a disc and a half a day. Then she went back and watched the first half of seasson 1. That was the quickest run through of the series I've ever had.
As for the age thing, I agree that even kids will like it even if they don't catch the more subtle things. I was about 10-11 when the pilot aired and was hooked immediatly. Had all my friends watch the tape, none of which were really interested.
One more thing to consider is that times have changed...and neither B5's CGI nor its status as a "rare" Scifi show in the lineup are "current enough" to convince many kids these days to watch it. Most folks of that age are savvy enough to know how to download TV shows, and would likely be able to find those which interest them, but CGI poses a major leap in the modern era, with many folks prefering shows with a "fresh feel" to the relatively outdated early seasons.
