Proper Age to Appreciate B5

Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
I'm trying to decide if its the right time to expose the little one to B5, I dont want to expose her to it too soon, or she may be too young and not appreicate it.

or, i could jsut be looking for a good excuse to watch the whole series over again.. but i wuold like her to see it, lol

• 12 years. Allow her to grow up with the series and do not force her to watch all episodes at once.

Right from the beginning! With that funky holding-eyes-open stuff from A Clockwork Orange!

Make sure you take target practice while he is doing this, as it will enhance agility, improve stamina, and build proper work ethic.

oh its much too late for that, she already is a geek!

her sister (the runaway) was already way into Sci-Fi by 7, maybe i shouldnt have let her watch Alien so young though... oh well.

I'd recommend not trying to explain too many of the deeper points. I've at least found myself trying to talk halfway through a sci-fi show to explain things and noticed how annoying it can be :D

I'm the very opposite. I refuse to tell people anything other than "remember it and keep watching, you'll find out later on." Even when they ask questions.

Entil'Zha: A more serious response: I would say there's no reason you can't start at 6, 7 or 8, especially if she's interested. But consider doing it at a rate of one episode a week (certainly no more than one a day :)).

Start her now because when she's a teenager she probably won't care for such things anymore.

The big problem I've found seems to be getting past season 1. Having just done so with friends, it's proven to be really painful at times. The only thing that kept us going was the promise of better stuff. to come. I'm wondering if maybe there's a way to condense S1 in such a way as to half/quarter it, making it easier to swallow and still getting the viewer into the show. I know that the time spent on S1 really turned off at least two of these friends, but showing one In The Beginning was motivation enough to get through it.

Well, after seeing seasons 2-5, season 1 looks poor.

However, if you haven't seen seasons 2-5, season 1 is excellent. After I got the DVDs and was able to go back and watch all the seasons, having not seen them in years, season one left me astounded at how good it was - and this was even knowing that better stuff was coming. The thing is, once you know the later seasons, season 1 just isn't anywhere near as good. But frankly, season one would have been a great show even without the promise of what was coming. The political intreague and infighting was wonderfully played, and yet not overdone. The mystery was built, but not punctured. The stage was set for what was coming in the next 3 years, but they were just etheral hints that left you grasping for the next seasons. The way JMS pulled off the masterful art of the first season is lost to those that have seen the later seasons, but it's there, clearly shining for those that have never seen the show before.

Even with the relative quality taken into account, I thought S1 was weak. It spent all of its time developing the characters, or just plain trying to, but never actually doing much of anything. The end result is a turned-off viewer base. on top of this, many of the plots and twists were rather predictable, as evidenced by two friends who predicted each and every turn, yet having never seen a single episode of the show before.

It just didn't work well. The characters were nice, but it took so long for any of them to get into anything that it was more aggrivating than anything else. I personally cannot wait until we hit season 3 (We're currently mid-S2), but only time will tell how the show stands up in the eyes of the younger races.

Also, with shows like Farscape, Firefly, etc...I just don't see enough reason to believe anymore that a show's first season can forsake quality for character development. However, class begins now. I vanish.

4: Intro to Organic Technology and Interplanetary Expedition (IPX), though otherwise not needed
6: Major plot episode: First Ones; Psi Corps intro; Backplot on Clark/Santiago
7: Major development of backplot of Earth anti-alien influence - important for Season 3 breakaway.
8: Major plot episode: Battle of the Line and continued development of Setai Delenn
11: Major development of backplot of Clark/Santiago + connection to anti-alien groups (ep 7).
13: Major plot episode - Shadows arrive
18/19: Major plot episode - Epsilon 3

5, 9, 12, 17

Episodes that can be skipped becuase they don't build the show much:

Umm, i'm sorry to have to say this, but when my wife was going into labor..... DS9 was on the TV in the room, i can even tell you the episode (its the one where DR Bashir meets all the insane genetically enginered people from "the institute")

I saw B5 on TV when I was a kid, on Channel 4. I have this vague memory in my head of Captain-someone walking through a B5-like corridor, saying something about taking over the job... For some reason, in my head this corridor was very poorly lit...

I still have no idea to this day if that show was B5 or not. It feels like it. But I just can't picture it. But naturally, it wasn't until Thirdspace was on TV that really got me interested in B5. Back then, I was just a kid, and all I liked was space battles. I'd never seen anything so exciting as Thirdspace. Yeah, I know - Ugh? I also watched Crusade on C4, somehow not even knowing it was related to B5 at the time. Ofcourse, it wasn't until a fair bit later with the DVD releases that I got into the series. But, that's how it is when your a kid. Stuff like B5 wasn't as easy to get into. What, don't you remember, or are you another London Mollari "I was never a child"? So, an impressionable age to watch B5 is... Well... Maybe about 14 at least? Anything younger would seem stupid.
• I would say 15
• My only regret was watching too much Star Trak it really set the stage for my alien thinking.

When B5 finally ended I went totally insane.:shadow1: :shadow1: :shadow1: :shadow1: :shadow1: :shadow1: :shadow1: :shadow1: :shadow1: :shadow1:

HuntSmacker: I grew up on Star Trek from before I can remember. I can remember watching "Encounter and Farpoint" when I was 7 and thinking I liked the new ship. Just being a kid doesn't immediately mean someone can't enjoy scifi. It depends on the kid. I was a kid obsessed with space and scifi, so it worked for me.

That's OK. DS9 is good too.

And your point? I watched Star Trek TOS when I was 4, and watched TNG when it first aired on the BBC as a kid. And I've always watched Star Trek up until the last one this year.

But, if I'd have watched something like Babylon 5, Farscape or the new BSG when I was a kid, it's not that I wouldn't have enjoyed it. THAT is not the point. It's that I wouldn't have appreciated it as much at the time. There are certain things, levels of understanding, emotional barriers that only exist when you grow up. When your 15, things you watched when you were 12 seem different. When your 20, things you watched when you were 15, again, seemed diffierent. Every year, you think you've got it all worked out... But then, you find out your wrong.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Which is my point. While younger kids might not appreciate all the finer points, they'll still enjoy it, so no reason to wait till later to introduce them to it. :)

I remember watching TNG and Babylon 5 when they first aired (I'm 21 now so subtract years as needed). I found a lot of joy rewatching babylon 5 as the boxsexs came out, catching many of the more subtle messages and morals that I didn't when I was much younger. To be honest watching babylon 5 at the age i did shaped my development and I honestly feel I'm a better person because of what i learned in the series.
• HuntSmackerHuntSmacker Firstones Ambassador to Starcraftia
^Amen to that.

Heck, I think I even made my grotchety (sp?) grandmother a better person after showing her B5. ;)
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Crotchety (I think).
I'm surprised you even got her to watch B5. I couldn't see any of my grand parents (or even my parents) watching B5.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
I watched B5 right from the first time it was shown on Channel 4, I must have been 9 or 10 at the time.

I had been watching the original Star Trek for awhile before that but B5 was very much like a game I had been obsessing over (Frontier Elite 2) so I really got into it.

• HuntSmackerHuntSmacker Firstones Ambassador to Starcraftia
Hehe my grandmother is the coolest, into all the sci-fi and that. :D I also have my mother hooked on BSG, and we also watched all of DS9 and Voyager (Meh, it's a very womanly show Voyager). As for my dad, well, he just takes the piss out of anything remotely sci-fi these days, I wanna swat him most days. ;)
