Posting this from Mac OS X x86 :)

MundaneMundane Elite Ranger
Just had to try it. Posting this from Mac OS X Tiger on my Dell Inspiron 8600 with dualboot to Windows XP. I got ethernet, wifi and sound working. No graphics acceleration nor higher resolution than 1280 and 32bit colour.

Well you can always stick with Windows

Personally I get alot more out of my Mac then I ever have out of my IBM compatible PC.

IF we are talking about gaming though that a whole nother story.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
I should get a mac mini and run linux on it...and then get a PC and run MacOS on it.
• Tell me one game that supports Linux?

The Quake series.

I thought Wine also enabled Linux users to run Windows games (and other apps for that matter) that don't necessarily have native Linux support.

Yes, it does. Provided you pray to the appropriate gods (include sacrifices as necessary), perform the ritualistic dances, and sit backwards in front of your keyboard.

The official release version will be locked to Apple's hardware. Expect it to be cracked real soon after release, but still not work properly on most hardware due to lack of driver support.

UT 2k3 and 2k4 both have linux versions on the same discs as the windows, kinda like Blizzard does for windows/mac

true, but if PearPC can run MacOS emulated on a PC now, perhaps they'll find a way to get it to run moderatly fast on a PC

HOWEVER, with the price of Mini's, its almost not worth it.

plus, we had a couple Apple Hadware Engineers in earlier this summer, and i was talking to them and i mentione d that the price of the mini was great, and that when they swithced to Intel i might get one, and he said "well with the Intel mini being only $399 that only makes sense" then he got real quiet like he said something he shouldnt have.

So MAYBE, the Intel Mini is gonna be even cheaper.

i'd love it if it was $399, i need 10 of them.

What he said...

Driver support will likely be the biggest problem. I don't see Apple making a generic x86 version of the OS. Too much of their profit likely results from the sale of hardware. It also means they loose a lot of control in hardware support which means more problems like those MS faces. Bad for their image.

And let's not forget that Neverwinter Nights works on Linux. :)

Still, might get a Mac-mini when I get out of the Finnish defence forces.

Enough people that will create open-source drivers I suppose....
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
I wouldn't count on it.
• MundaneMundane Elite Ranger
Why?
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Because writing drivers is actually really hard. If we're lucky, a few people will port their favorite BSD drivers, but I don't expect to see that in any big surge.
• Vorlons in my HeadVorlons in my Head The Vorlons told me to.
Writing drivers is extremely difficult and requires very intricate knowledge of most of todays very complex hardware. The very manufacturers that develop the stuff themselves have a lot of trouble as it is getting good drivers out. Thats not information thats exactly freely available outside the manufacturer either.

after he said it, he got really fidgity, so who knows, either way, i really think that them switching to Intel is a good thing.

MIGHT finally drive the price of mac hardware down.
