Positive effect of Katrina?

FreejackFreejack Jake the Not-so-Wise
Last night there was a news story about a couple who had been relocated to Idaho after the disaster in New Orleans. They had lost everything and only had a few cloths and some keepsakes left. They had been provided a new apartment and furniture, and all of which were in much better condition than what they had before the storm. The mother had already been on a couple job interviews and the father had enrolled in a tech school.

It got me to thinking; one of the more positive effects of this storm will be to break up the density of poverty that was present in some areas of New Orleans. Sure many will return, but there are a large number who will be able to relocate and settle into areas where they will make a fresh start, which is a opportunity they likely would not have had otherwise.

A second benefit is that as these neighborhoods in NO are rebuilt, they will likely rebuilt with better housing, streets and public facilities, further helping the poverty situation.

Your thoughts?

Jake

i agree. despite all the pain and suffering, i think there is the hope that next time it can be rebuilt and rebuilt better than before. a big part of the problem most of the time is that it is hard to build something new unless you have to...

To me the greatest change is that all the post katrina probes and investigations will probably finally clean the entire house in a state that has suffered from massive amounts of political corruption.

With a bit of luck it'll get bush to rethink the Kyoto Protocol

"There's no such thing as global warming or glass house effect, or what every you call it, the corporations backing me said so" Sort of think? :)

yup, thats pretty much exactly what i expect:rolleyes:
  • What you guys think is greenhouse effect is actually caused by thiings that are not under our control, its all with the sun cycles every 20 years and electromagnetic induction into the Earths core. Warmer oceans are are caused by more energy output from the sun.

Ah, pseudoscience! Isn't it great? If I were at home I'd paste my essay from one of my geography papers on current theories for the causes of ice ages.
  • exactly my point.. great climate changes have happened without human made pollution, even before humans existed this stuff was going on!

Sunspot cycle is 11 years and the earths core is not headted by the electromagnetic radiation (most of which wont make through 10 m of crust) but by the decay of radioative isotopes and leftover heat from creation. (Source: Any geology textbook from the past 25 years). IIRC hurricain strength in on a 50 eyar cycle. Now there are two schools of thought: one is that we should be getting warmer but the process is artifically accelerated, and another smaller newer one is that we should be in another ice age NOW, but the alterations to the environment during the first agricultural revolution was just enough to prevent that from happening.

Yes, the climate changes. However it is quite likely that humans have had an effect on the current changes.
And anyway, even if we hadn't had an effect, there's a principle that says it's better to do something even if you may not have a problem than to do nothing and risk that problem being true. Only put better than that.

    Fuck the Kyoto protocol.

    and yes I'm serious.

It's a good set of rules, but 100% impossible for the USA to meet it. If we signed on, we'd just be putting ourselves in debt to the UN, senceless to do IMHO.

Of course, I also hate the UN. So go fig.

The Kyoto Protocol has some serious flaws, but just ignoring it without doing anything better isn't exactly helping.

    I agree.
To say the same thing but a different way:

The US government had a chance to build up defences against a major hurricane strike in plenty of time and the advice was to do so but it was deemed a poor use of money for something that might not happen.

Had they spent the money and put the defences in place that were advised then the massive damage that has been incurred would either have been reduced or evaded completely.

We all paid the price for that shortsightedness as the US was unable to process the quantity of oil that it requires, pulled in more oil than normal from other sources and so the price that we paid at the pumps went up.

Doing nothing is not a sensible option

Some serious flaws? SOME serious flaws?

The whole thing was a farce, several european countries including France knew they couldnt afford to implement its demands either, so they made sure to include provisions which they knew the US would not accept, so there for they would have a scape goat for not abiding by it also.

Nonono you have it all wrong

The Guardian is reporting on what may be the weirdest Hurricane Katrina story yet. Military trained dolphins may have been released into the wild by the Hurricane's devastation." From the article: "Experts who have studied the U.S. navy's cetacean training exercises claim the 36 mammals could be carrying 'toxic dart' guns. Divers and surfers risk attack, they claim, from a species considered to be among the planet's smartest.
