The idea of the comic sounds like a good idea. Reminds me of the idea for Animatrix, having a cartoon version of The Matrix on the web, with various contributing artists.

What I'd like to see is the Officers Journal become an online graphical comic. Ok it might be too much to work on, but its an idea.

I'd be quite happy to pay a fee for access to such material, in order to keep firstones afloat. I think it would be a shame for Firstones to go under, especially when things are developing again and could potentially get very interesting. Ok sorry for being all hint hint again, but I am in the know about something, and if it goes ahead it will be brilliant for all of us here at Firstones, and for all B5 fans. Now is the time to keep this community together.

I'm not really sure what I could contribute to the project, but if help is required I'm sure I can lend a hand.

An online magazine with news about:
-Everything B5 related
-B5 mods
-Scifi games

And maybe more, is the best idea as I see it. I could have helped programming the site, the only problem is that it then has to be in ASP.....

Since no one is charging anybody for anything at the moment, and since no one is making any money, we've been lucky that the powers who own the B5 license (WB) have looked the other way, like others do with mods based on someone else’s license. But as soon as we start charging for access to a product based on someone else's license, WB, et.al. could decide to get nasty. We would in effect be charging for intellectual property we don't own.

So the way this is put together is critical. We have to be very clear that access to the webcomic is a donation that is fully applied to server cost and that no one is making any money. Even so, I doubt that it would be legal, but if we’re very clear that no one is making money, at least WB may continue to look the other way. It would be even better to completely divorce the webcomic from any kind of charge, and instead attach the charge to access to Firstones.com, where the webcomic just happens to reside.

The OJ author is opposed, absolutely, to having any kind of a charge attached to OJ. This is a free service that has no direct connection to Firstones.com that is being undertaken as a "thank you" to the great fans of a sim that didn't make it.

IMO, the webcomic should be seen as extremely polished fan fiction.

You beat me to it, i was just going to bring up this same point, if we are not careful we may end up biting ourselves in the butt.

I'm all for making first ones some money to pay for bandwidth etc, i know how much it costs. but we need to be careful, because if we irratate the wrong people (wb etc) we could find ourselves without a site at all.

well that defeats one purpose... keeping the boards themselves free !

sigh...

its never easy

what is it with B5... if anything is to ever get off the ground one has to claw oneself over the Himilayas in a thong to get it done...

There is no way I'm not going to contact WB with atleast one finished panel... a rough guide to the story arc/setting/characters, with completely transparent accounting of any money we make...and make it very plain that no-one is doing anything other than 'supporting a habit' rather than making any money.

If the comic grew beyond its original scope then I'd be very happy to try and negotiate a licence. I know the likelyhood of that is tiny.. but hey... optimism is a good thing.

Well technically the boards would be free, its all symantecs, and in the way you portray it.

Any way you slice it, politics sucks.

Is there anyway we could "merge" this site with someone else? B5TV (formerly B5LR), for instance, which already does a great deal of what we're talking about here?

If 10 people each donated 10-dollars a month...

...it could all be very simple, and the Webcomic could be just for fun.

Even if we meet the financial need, we still have to have replacements for the admin functions when Sanfam is out of the picture...
• BekennBekenn Sinclair's Duck
I nominate Biggles! Nobody with 14,731 posts could ever possibly be "out of the picture."

Oh, wait, that's 14,732. Oops, I mean 14,733. Erm... never mind.

One other option you should consider.

Gagames still has this server running. It doesn't have much free space anymore, but it has enough to host the essentials. We could find somewhere else to host all the big files, like the mod projects' downloads, and just keep the main operation here.

Only downside is the mods being able to directly update their projects, since only one login exists on this server, and Lorien has forbade us (Sanfam and I) from sharing it with anyone else, for fear of abuse.

Something to consider...

And if we are stuck for an admin, I can return. I have all tech courses next year, and nothing important going this summer. Lots of free time, and lots of experience

If it's server related, we got it covered. =) That's part of our job.

If it's HTML, CGI, etc....I don't have enough time to take on another site to help out and manage. Sorry

I had another idea...

P2P networks. All the downloads could placed in our Kazaa or equivalent share folders. Use a keyphrase, maybe even something random (like n3dkeegfdw) to allow all our files to turn up when you search for that. If a couple dozen people are willing to keep this running in the background, we can effectively serve all the files I think.

Nah. Too much trouble.

And also, the GA Games server couldn't handle the site as it is now.

Out of interest, I checked the pageview statistics for this place. In june alone, we broke 1.6 million hits. Absolutely incredible! (and way beyond the capacity of the GA Games server)

I'll follow up with useful information tomorrow. It's getting real late around here.

Freeze had the wonderful idea of sponsorship (for various reasons that we shall not go into at this time). It seems this hadn't occured to Sanfam, and I know it hadn't occured to me. Anyway, so far Sanfam is considering Alienware and some other PC making company, I can't remember who. Anyone got any other ideas for sponsors?
