Also consider that the 737 is one of the most popular passenger jets and that they are commonly used by smaller, lower cost, regional airlines who may not be putting enough money into maintenance (whether because they can't afford it or don't want to spend the money on it). This quote from the article is of particular interest:

All in all the planes seem to suffer a variety of failures, indicicating that its not just a design flaw brining them down.

And even if there was a common failure, As biggles said (and what I would have posted, had he not) there are just so many of them in the skies. It's unbelievable how far they outnumber the other models, so having a couple go down just doesn't seem all too odd.
