Thinking of buying a new computer..
Messiah
Failed Experiment
in Zocalo v2.0
A laptop. Around $1300, at which price I get either a:
PAZV6152EASF, AMD Athlon 64 processor, 512mb ram, 80gb harddrive, DVD burner, wireless networking, 15.4" wide TFT etc..
or a:
ENR4621SF, Intel Celeron M360 processor (1.4 Ghz), 1024md ram, 50gb harddrive, dvd burner, 15.4 wide TFT etc..
The later being approx $130 cheaper. I could get them each for $40 a month for about 4 years (depending on which).
Now, for my question. If I wait a year, how much will have happened? Pricing, memory size, Hd size etc is interesting, your guesses?

I wouldnt buy the celeron processor one though. You will regret it, even for simple processing the celeron is a real piece of shit.
When I needed a laptop, I bought one with a Intel mobile processor, 1gb of ram and an ati radeon 9600 pro video card. I can play half life 2 on the plane with that laptop.
Now you dont have to play games to want a computer thats not going to act like a pig, the problem I had is before this laptop, I had my company issued Compaq with its crappy celeron. It had a hard time running Adobe acrobat (much less photoshop). I couldnt have multiple windows of acrobat running at once. Since all of my service notes and books are in adobe format, that sucked ass.
I fail to see a graphics card listed with either of those laptops...
Quite.
If you're forking-out the reddies, Messiah, you may as well go the whole hog. In other words, see if you can stretch to a GeForce 7800GTX. (If the motherboard's compatible, that is...) ;)
I also recommend buying something with only 256 megs of RAM and upgrading it yourself at a store - most online stores tend to really molest you for that extra ram stick.
$13000 is that the right number??
Hehe.. Ok, edited that.. ;)

The other one doesnt state, but the HP laptops (which the other one is one of) have some kind of Intel graphics card (Like "Intel Extreme Graphics 2" or "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 ")
Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it. :)

Sorry, its in Swedish, it states the graphics card is an "Onboard -Intel®" Guess Ill have to write them about it eh?

damn if you play with coupons for dell, you can get an inspiron 9300 for around 1300, with a 17.4 inch widescreen display, Mobile Pentium 1.73, a gig of ram, dvd drive etc etc etc.
you just gotta look for the coupons, last good one i saw, was $750 off any laptop over $1899 go to www.ableshoppers.com click on the "Dell Coupons" link over ont he side.
then go spec out your dell, and enter the coupon code in your shopping cart.
And, nobodys answered this yet:

Checked it out, problem is shipping to Sweden, of course Dell.se exists, but its more expensive of course..

shoot, thats rihgt, i forgot about the shipping.
as for whats going to happen in a year, you CANNOT purchase a computer thinkiing like that, because you will be waiting forever to buy one, there is ALWAYS better, faster, bigger 1 year away.
just my .2$
(and it just makes notebook wider)
I would recommend SXGA+ display.
Acer Travelmate 4000-serie has some models with it,
Travelmate 8000-serie should have it also while newer 8100-serie has low screen... Unfortunately 8000-serie has integrated Intel's extreme graphic decelarator. (BTW, with Acer W in model number means low screen)
Celeron M is based to Pentium M, biggest differences are smaller cache and lack of most efficient power saving features.
http://www.tomshardware.com/mobile/20040309/
And unless you're buying it just for replacing desktop PC forget desktop processor models.
You might want to check this shop.

my experience with notebooks is that intel cpus produce much more heat... every (more or less recent) intel notebook i tried was insanely hot next to the touchpad (where your hand would be resting when typing).
99% sure doesn't have sh*t to do with CPU, HD produces considerable amount of heat and at least in my Centrino notebook that's where HD is.
And are you afraid of German keyboard layout? If not, then I think you should consider of buying the laptop from Germany. German pricewatch
Then there's the issue of weight and battery life. If you want a DTR (DeskTop Replacement) I'd recommend Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M 3438. But if you'd prefer a real laptop that isn't too heavy and manages without recharging several hours, a Centrino machine with GMA900 is required.
2. I would not touch a Celeron with a 100 foot pole.
If you're going for a laptop, you need either a AMD Turion 64 or a Intel Centrino chip.
I just picked up an HP Laptop a few weeks back with an AMD Turion 64 ML-34. Quite nice if you ask me. Starting price was good, but by the time you upgraded the CPU to the one I got, the memory to 1GB, and every thing else you need for a decent system it came out to about $1200.
I've been happy with it. One recommendation if you go with it: Get the Firewire part, not for the firewire, but becuase it is the only way to get a USB port in a useful location for a mouse to be plugged in. The rest are just in the way! I made the mistake of not getting that extra USB, and with the only two ports on the left and right near the front, it is either in the way of the mouse itself, or in the way of any paper you want to set next to the laptop.

Yeah, but, Im going to be stuck at my school without any connection for another year, where I dont use computers much, in a year, Im going to move back to Gothenburg, get broadband connected start studying a theoretical education etc. Ill need it then, I dont really do now..
OK, let's start with a question: what kind of games do you wanna play? GMA900 is more than adequate for Civ3 and older first person shooters (like for example Alien versus Predator)... it is just about as powerful as ATI Mobility Radeon 9000.

I had avoided that question, because Ive been thinking of buying an xbox 360 (yeah I know about the stupid pricing levels), and I wanted an unbiased answer..
But, since its been asked, I dont know how many games Ill play, probably just WoW..
Mostly, Itll be used to write on, compose on, surf the net, perhaps play movies, edit pictures, that shit.
Oh, and I think prices in germany are about the same as here..
Im not scared of the German layout either, its practically the same as here, but with a cool ü instead of the å.. ;)

Recommended system for playing WoW includes a GF6600/R9600 or better and most importantly 1GB of memory, so a DTR it must be then... or maybe not. Here's a few alternatives for FSC Amilo M 3438:
http://www.geizhals.at/deutschland/a161970.html
http://www.geizhals.at/deutschland/a153128.html
http://www.geizhals.at/deutschland/a159783.html
Edit: and this one too:
Mostly, Itll be used to write on, compose on, surf the net, perhaps play movies, edit pictures, that shit.
Composing also requires a lot of processor power, so DTR saves the day again. I just hope that you won't have to carry that DTR from one place to another too often...

ARen't they extinct?
Thanks! Ill have to go over those links in the morrow, too tired to think right now..
Take it from someone who has given laptops to co-workes and seen them come back after real world use a year later...
IBM - IBM - IBM - IBM...
I'm not going to get into what screen ~ what chip ~ and what graphics ~ or even what WiFi ~ because it all depends on what you are going to use the thing for. You've not given enough detail for anyone to advise much.
That said ~ pay a little more for an IBM. IBM is the way to go for laptops hands down IMO. :)

...though I have to admit that those laptops are quality stuff. They just don't make gaming platforms for regular customers, Mobility Radeon X300 is the fastest graphics card the company use in their mainstream products.

IBM's laptop division was bought by a Chinese company. Forget it...
Following on what Eclecticonaut said: You won't find anything better than an ATI Radeon X200 on a AMD Turion 64 yet. The X200 is built into the Via chipset, and NO other chipset is out there, and NO computer manufacturer is going to put in an extra videocard in a laptop if it's already in the chipset. Other than that, seriously consider the AMD Turion 64. It is a fast chip.

if you want to pay a little more, i say go for the Vaio, I'm the general manager of an internet cafe, so i see people come in with their laptops all day every day, and i get to listen to their likes, dislikes, horror stories, and from what people say here, the top 2 laptop brands, in service and customer satisfaction are..
#1 Dell, #2 Sony Vaio
the bottom 2?
Second most complaints we get about laptops... IBM
Most complaints... HP
I've had more than one person telling me they were trying to get rid of their brand new HP's cause they were utter crap. (i love my HP Ipaq)

At least here in Finland Dells seems to be very heavily overpriced.
Most complaints... HP
LOL
Reminds me about certain Finnish words... Helvetin Paska.
I guess first word doesn't need translation, and second word, well, pick which one (/all) you want: shit... crap... merde... scheisse.
PS. X300 is useless, even integrated decelerators might beat it.

X300 gets about 1500 3DMarks (@3DMark03) and GMA900 ~1000.

well here anyway, if you use the coupon codes that are floating around the web, you can get some good deals on dells, i dunno about other places.
i've actually been looking at the Inspiron 9300 myself, 17.4 inch widescreen display, so i can watch DVD's on it, its a hefty sized unit, but i'm not looking for extreme portability.
now i just gotta actually buy it, even though with the coupons i can get it down below $1200, well, $1200 would pay off about 1/5th of what i still owe on my car...
Inspiron 9300... Starting from 1650 Brussels roubles.
For dollars multiply it with 1.22
So let's see what it looks like when you "start buying" it in Dell's webshop...
Pentium® M 730 1.6GHz 2MB L2 (Dothan core)
WXGA+ (1440x900)
512MB 533MHz DDR II SDRAM 2x256MB or 1x512MB
40GB IDE (5.400 RPM)
64MB DDR RADEON™ X300
8x DVD / 24x CD-RW COMBO
XP Home
Price including taxes and freight... 2036 Brussels roubles!
So does that price look fair for that configuration?
Especially while you could get this and hundred lower pricetag.
Intel® Pentium® M 760 (2 GHz)
2x512 MB
100 GB
Dual layer DVD±RW
15,4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050)
ATI mobility radeon X700 - 128 Mt
XP Pro (Fin, Swe, Eng)
Oh and this one is Acer TravelMate 8104WLMi.
And width of it is 36cm instead of 40cm so this would fit much easier into common laptop cases.
(althought I would still prefer 15" SXGA+, 1440x1050 screen with couple centimeters smaller width which fits just well to Targus' rucksack case)

But, since its been asked, I dont know how many games Ill play, probably just WoW.
hey, now I can comment again. My Dell is about 9 months old now, its the 1.6 Pentium M with 1GB of Ram and the Radeon mobility 9600 pro (128mb ram). And it runs WoW, just fine. Hell, it even runs half life 2 and its mods at around 50fps.
Have you looked at ABS computers?? They make great laptops, and it came down to them and dell when I bought this one. I went with the dell just because a buddy of mine got me a deal on it through his work.
