• Does this chart not discard and ignore... a rather significant meaning of "geek" -- related to familiarity with particular technologies, and willingness to use them in new and nonsensical ways?

Or am I confusing geek with some other English word, like:

a) nerd?
b) phreak?
• LMAO!!! I love the way furries are at the bottom! :D

Regards,
Morden
• I find it insulting that I've been included on the same hierarchy as furries. :p
• Mate, if you look at the chart, no-one is on the same level as furries... :p

What are you, BTW? ;)

Regards,
Morden
• All over the place. I'm a Science Fiction fan, a video gamer, something of a Heinlein fan, an amateur SF writer, and a scifi TV fan. :p
• Pretty much the same; I'm coverered in several catagories. :)

Sod it, I'll put my head on the block and admit to being a furry. I'm not weird, honest!! :nervous:

Anyway, I suppose that's what makes the hierarchy inherently flawed; it apparently ignores the cosmopolitan nature of a lot of "geeks". In fact, I think the word itself is too restrictive and generates too many stereotypes in its connotations. That's what I don't like about labelling; it may be convenient, but it's totally inadequate when it comes to gauging the individual human character. ;)

Regards,
Morden
• In very general terms, I consider "geeks" to be technophiles, particularly computer gamers, whereas I consider "nerds" to be more concerned with areas of academic interest. However, I don't think I've ever used the term nerd. I'm a computer geek, an english geek, and a philosophy geek. I blame it on popular culture's derogatory use of the latter term.

Exactly. (Although I love the way The Simpsons always hypocritically both parodied and reinforced the stereotypes.) ;)

I just don't like the way that it's perceived that "geeks" have to correspond to a certain set of attributes. I don't use the terms either, I just tend to take people as they come. That reminds me, the first meeting of the Bristol University Science Fiction Society for my first year was a bit scary. I always considered myself "into" sci-fi, but some of the people there were just plain weird:

Me: Hiya mate, I'm George.
Guy#1: "You may call me Lord Azrael."
Me: "Okay..."
Guy#2: "His real name's Steven."
Guy#1: "I like to use my D&D character's name."
Me: "Hiya Steven, nice to meet you."

Believe it or not, that actually happened. We all watched Bram Stoker's Dracula, with myself making MST3K style riffs throughout. Still, I never went back after that.

Regards,
Morden

They actually went down *really* well!

The best one IMO, was when the screen panned overhead to Brannagh and the others are running through the Swiss Alps, and I starting singing: "The hills are alive... With the sound of music..." The room pretty much erupted. :p

I only did a few riffs, but they were all good 'uns. ;)

Ahh poor, poor furries.

I like read furry commics. I understand the idea of anthropomorphising, or hell what ever the referse is called. I mean if I was a critter, Id probably be some type of bear.

But furries look to be nuts to everybody else. however they fit in the catagory of mostly harmless.

the last catagory though, the furry self inserting erotic fanfiction writers. THEY need to die... alot, with much violence.

Exactly. I usually keep it to myself, to be honest, I'd probably get a lot of dodgy looks from people, merely trying to explain the concept. (I casually told a "friend" of mine of my interest in furrydom when I was younger, and it was halfway around the school by lunchtime.)

Agreed on self-inserting writers. I mean, WTF? I'd suck as a character! And Star Trek? ;)

you aint the only furry around here, talk to Sanfam he keeps tabs on these things, he's not a furry himself but he is a furry booster or something :D

Anyways back to more important things, fanfic writers who do self inserts and fuck up the continum, those people need to be shot!!!

Especially those who write Neon Genesis Evnagelion fanfction just to have their "avatar" mollest Rei Ayanami

it IS done by totally depraved perverts who really ought to be removed from the gene pool. especially those bastards who write Love Hina fanfiction to go after poor Shinubu.. buncha sickos.

*Raises hand nervously*

Er, what does that mean in English? :nervous:

Seriously, if you're saying what I think your saying, then I agree. Some Anime fan stuff can be pretty sick from what I hear.

BTW: What's a "furry booster"? ;)

Having lived for an extended period of time with one and a half fursuiters (ambiguity rules), I think I can say with authority that yes, you are weird :p
Tyvar said something along the lines of...

There's even more to it than that. The sheer amount of roleplaying that seems to go along with being a fursuiter (perhaps not the case with a non-fursuiter) seems to push them almost straight into that little terrority of fanfic and disturbing photoshops of anthromorphized creatures :p Self-insertion into fanfic seems to occur almost by default, with references to other furs often wandering in freely :D

As for bears, that's already taken by my other roomate, the 1/2 fur ;)

LOL! Sanfam, I am most definitely not a 'suiter! I'm into the whole anthropomorphic concept, and am an avid fan of the artwork and literature, but I'd never go so far as wearing a costume! Now that *is* weird! :D

LIES! You know you are... :D
• Look, I *do* dress up, bit NOT in a fursuit! Here's the evidence! :D

Basicly the weridos write stories where they insert themselves so they can get it on with various characters in the show/manga, usually the underage ones it seems

A "booster" as in a "booster club" refers to an american phenomeon where you have an idividual or group who works to support, and raise the profile some something, often things like school sports teams, but sometimes other causes and such

Sanfam is always trying to raise Furry awareness and advance the Furry agenda everywhere he goes ;)

Like those guys handing out bottles of Coca Cola to people on the street in those advertising campaigns? Neat! :p

Seriously, raising furry awareness is a good thing, especially because of the subculure's perceived "weirdness" and deviancy by society as a whole. On that note, what proportion of furs are *actually* 'suiters? It can't be that many, surely? (I'd like to reiterate that I'd never wear a fursuit in public. Or even just a tail like some guys do.) ;)

On that note, what *is* the "furry agenda"?

Nay :p

I was the defacto photographer for *everything* that happened in any relative proximity.

I assure you that many of the photos I've got may not be suited for mentally sound children under the age of..well..they're not particularly suited for anyone ;)

I'll see what I can do, though.
• If you could post them up here mate, that'd be ace. Again, I don't and would never dress up in a fursuit myself, but it'd be interesting to see how other people do it! :D
