is b5 dead?
Warleader D'Ren
Ranger
in Babylon 5
is it just me or the whole franchise suddenly went belly up? i mean star wars hung in there by producing source books and novels for fans, why can't jms and crew do the same?
technomage trilogy was great, much better than any star wars novel i've read, so why can't we have at least some books to keep the place warm until the new series
and the showing of LOTR during superbowl was stupid, no show will generate high ranking when everyone is watching american football
anyways my 2 cents...and centauri still suck

The B5 universe still has a lot to offer - it's not like some of the more peripheral sci-fi creations which have written themselves into a blackhole, only to see the fanbase rapidly sucked away
You've got to look elsewhere, then - and it's pretty obvious where it lies, as can be seen from the sheer market forces which killed off ItF; which called a halt to Crusade; and have left future B5 products hanging in the air...
- Warleader, you like Battletech? Board or computer? I'll give you a shout - always good to meet other fans

You could always start buying AoG's B5 Wars books and game set. They have the Fleet Action 2 line due out soon, the GROPOS line and the Babylon 5 Wars line. That will keep you busy for a while

A dream of a novel told through the medium of television. JMS told the tale he wanted to tell. At one point, I believe he stated that he wasn't interested in spin-offs. He changed his mind on this, probably because he enjoyed playing in that universe.
But the time for new B5 is pretty much over. Much like Star Trek, it will probably be in reruns forever. But I wouldn't expect anything new for some time.
Now, down the road, B5 may rise phoenix-like from the ashes, much as Trek did. I hope so. But it needs to lie dormant for awhile. Besides, the great maker is playing in other universes now, and enjoying himself there.
B5 was what it was meant to be, and much more. He told the tale he wanted and blew the station up so that others wouldn't be tempted to keep it going past the point where it interested him.
B5 will always be with us.
We take away the wonder and joy and the things it has taught us.
We may go back now and then to visit familiar episodes like old friends, to be surprised anew.
We will always have B5.
We even still have the mods and the freeware stuff going on (IFH ROCKS!).
But it's time to move on, B5 for the most part is over.
i have neither dvd nor cable, and aside from my measily collection of tapes, all i got is 6 books to warm my heart
just recently i quit battletech, my other long running favorite
Besides, we need more Clanners, or they'll be nothing left for the Dragon to sharpen its claws on
I agree with his opinion. B5 told a story: begining, middle, end. It was set in a well thought out universe, with histories both before and after the main story, but the story was complete in itself. Attempting to create a fanchise, in my opinion, only cheapens the original.
For the same reason, I looked foward to Crusades, but not as much to B5:LOTR. JMS stated several times in rec.arts.scifi.tv.babylon5.moderated that he had he main story, and only one possible related story about the Rangers; there would be no other spin-offs. I guess Crusades and B5:LOTR could both be lumped under the second idea, but if he continued to push forth new ideas and stories, then he wouldn't be holding true to his original concept. Personnally, I think JMS has too much integrity for that.

As for the franchise issue - yeah, we got what we paid for, which was a universe and story far from the reaches of commercial orientation. But with them gone, we're stuck...
No matter whether we get told other stories in the B5 universe, it will never be dead because it told a story which can never be interpreted to its end, in its entirety. It is just too complex and too important for us as human beings.
One day, B5 might be dead, but it will only be the day when the last human (or alien capable of seeing, reading, or otherwise percepting this story) dies.

Later!
I do! A nice big ISA fleet could easily munch that. Lemme see a load of Whitestars and Hel'Zha's. A load of VCD's. A few Sheridan C&C Ships and a few Bismarck Assault carriers. NP for the ISA!
Later!
but most for the bad franchise management of
WB.
1º giving the game building to Sierra (the games was the main way for star wars to stay in the market for years).
and sierra making a SFS, and nothing more, with the posibility to make mods of half.life, tribes, homeworld , RPG....all that wasted.
2º not making a movie of b5 universe.
3º using actors poorly known...(some guest start from time to time....).
4º bad management in airing of the shows.
and i think some more things but....
with star wars again on business.....
with ST still running.........
sad.......
I don't think using relatively unknown actors was a mistake. At least they can act, unlike many more famous actors.

Brent Spiner: don't you remember, he was the country hick that showed up on Night Court from time to time...he's also had some bit parts in movies like Independence Day and Phenomenon...other than that I don't think he's done much at all.
