I'm sorry but your post makes no sense. Are you trying to be a troll or are drunk or something?

A credit card does not function as an identification card, and there are very few credit cards that have the owner's photos on them (I know of only one `fringe' card like that). I know of no credit card whatsoever that can function as an ID card - in fact, it's not unusal for someone to ask for your photo ID card when you try to use a credit card.

In the US, the most common form of photo ID is a drivers license, followed by Passport. There are also regular photo ID cards one can get if they do not want or cannot get a drivers license.

Anyway, I'm sure Canada has a very similar system - someone more familiar with Canada feel free to fill in the details.

Lines of credit are nothing new. In fact the concept of a line of credit has been in existance since the days of the Pyramids. This is not worthy of yet another "F you America Rant."

A credit card is just proof that someone out there has trusted you with a line of credit. It is for convenience.

Now: Why does the rental shop want a credit card?

If you run off with thier DVD or VHS never returning the movie or game it is not worth a rental shops time to come after you for payment. Billing ~ mailing ~ collection agencies and the like are expensive. They can simply bill your credit card ~ then it is the credit card that must try to collect.

The hotel doesn't want people making BS reservations and jumping out at the last minute. With your credit card number they can hold a room for you and bill you should you fail to appear. A reserved room that is a no show causes a hotel to loose tons of money.

In the end the credit card keeps down the costs and risk for businesses that rely on patron honesty. It is good for the whole of society. The cost of stollen DVD's and skipping out on reservations are not passed onto the 'good people.'

If you would like ~ most hotels are more than happy to take a cash or check deposit before your stay. Many rental shops will take cash collateral that they will refund when you return their property.

Here is a thought ~ if you think it is so bad ~ and there are other people who agree with you ~ open a cash only hotel and rental shop. Did you read this far with an open mind or are you too busy fuming about "Asshole Americans?"

I HATE CREDIT CARDS
I HATE AMERICA FOR STARTING IT ALL
we started credit cards?
how much credit card debt do you have?
Dinners culb
None
Tyvar: you should know by now
it's always america's fault
I dont have a credit card
I DONT WANT A CREDIT CARD
BUT A NEED ONE
then dont get one
I NEED ONE TO BOOK HOTELS, AND STUFF....
not necessarily
get a debit card then
certainly, for some hotels
Tyvar, I have one
but there will be plenty of hotels that dont need one
hell
i booked a few myself over the past couple of years
Reaver; INCOME!
in places overseas
income = purchase!
Yeah. alot of them need them
Sanfam: he's got a job
becuase you mite steal stuff
I have a job><
also, do what I did before I became dirt poor: buy stuff on the card with only whatyou have in cash form and pay it off in a week :p
deposit Reaver, a deposit
ask if you can make a deposit
I have money and shit...
Tyvar: I understand some of his problems
okey
I goto the video rental place...
Guess what, they need a credit card as part of id
to get a memeber ship
go to another video rental place then
Booking airline flights, need a credit card(not shure about that)
Biggles its the same at all of them
didnt need one to book any of my flights
certainly, if you book them online, you would. you have to pay somehow
I will bet you 5 bucks I will
but not if you book them through a travel agent
Ive got one and I dont touch it
Biggles: Lots ofplaes need cards here nowadays.
Reaver: buy your tickets in person through a travel agent
it's annoying as hell and is why I got one
also arrange your hotel state these days
Tyvar: Travel agents suck ass.:p
i;ve got one and i only use it online and overseas
the prices are rediculous.
also, reaver, if you're planning on travelling, not having a credit card is just plain stupid
travelling overseas i mean
but even long distances within canada
The hotel me and my friends want to stay at, needs one.. and my mom was mentioning that alot of hotel wont accept cash.. they need a credit card to go with ut
Id suggest at least get a visa credit/debit card
and make the charges as debit
or a mastercard one
I am getting sick of credit cards
Credit cards do have some big benefits.
you can utilize it as debit and everybody will accept it as a credit card
of course, Get a debit bank card
yes
yeah.. dont I dont want to end up in dept
that's what all of my bank accounts are.
debit cards :P
dont spend on it unless you have to and you wont have to go into debt
the nie thing is as long as they're endorsed, they're good.
that's how i do it
and it's worked fine for 5 years
It worked forme until my income stream crashed :p
with a debit card you dont get in evil debt
soon as you crash out your account the card gets rejected :D
but rember WITHDRAWLS HAPPEN FROM YOUR ACCOUNT IN REAL TIME
its like cash you spend it, its GONE
personaly I go the travel agent rout, cause then you CAN pay cash up front
and I pay cash for everything
the agent makes the other financial arrangements
i always find it amusing that countries other than australia and NZ are only just catching on to the idea of EFTPOS cards in recent years :)
even though i shouldnt given NZ and Aust were the ideal sized test market
and there are still quite a few hotels that if you show up with a good sized wad of cash they DONT ask
Luigi once booked into a hotel after depositing like 5 grand with the desk and securing another 10 in cash in the hotel safe
they didnt ask
I rather pay with cash
dont any of your friends have a credit card?
unfortunately, reaver, much of the western world is moving away from cash
deal with it.
problem is dealing in cash sends one message these days
"hey Im a CRIMINAL!"
I dont WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW WHO I AM, WHERE I AM, WHAT I AM DOING OR WHAT I AM BUYING
BECAUSE I AM OUT TO DESTROY THE PLANET!!!!
*sigh*
why does the world have to be like that
well around here we call it "modern technology"
Cash or Debit is okey with me
credit cards I hate
why?
I am afriad of them
Thats why
why?
Credit has one major, massive benefit
well, a ouple
but one of them is...
Buyer Protection
yes
"hey, i didnt authorise this!"
it's all part of the design. also, exchange rate beenfits.
watch the money come right back again
yeup
with mastercard stuff, you get the best exchange rate of the last seven days
its not that...
....
then what is it?
I will end up doing what my mom did
Reaver, it's called fiscal responbility.
don't overspend.
biggles doesnt want them to know what hotel he was at when they find the dead hooker
ending up in 20,000 dollars of debt
better yet, use your bank card, or if that doesn't work, request one that's credit endorsed.
"weve got a code 323"
"whats that"
so don't go into debt.
easy.
if you're sensible and only use the card when you have the money to pay it off immediately, no debt!
don't overspend.
that's how i do it
"dead hooker in ben aflecks trailer"
use a debit ard.
I dont trust my self with money
i don't use the card as a source of extra funds
or like I'm saying, use a credit-endorsed debit ard.
ben afleck "ahh haa!!! I didnt even have a hooker in my trailer today!!"
they're exactly like credit cards but draw on your actual money
the worst situation you can be in is having no money at all
no negatives.
well, some, but those are hard to achieve :P
I assume that's a "Gee, thanks Andy for pointing out that interesting and potentially useful alternative!"
dont get your hopes up :)

strange as this is gonna sound, i agree with Reaver. I just got back from travelling round Canada and one of the biggest problems i faced there was not getting about/dealing with strangers or anything like that. no, my biggest problem was not having a credit card! luckily i've got a visa debit card, but there were a few raised eyebrows when i handed it over. i've decided im going to get one at the freshers fair (so i can at least get the free popcorn maker that goes with it) so that when i go travelling next, there wont be a problem, but i'll make damn sure that i wont have it in my wallet normally!

Very untrue, just try using your debit card to rent a car... they are the only place AFAIK that will not treat it like an actual credit card oh they'll accept it for payment, but they'll run a credit check on you first, and if you dont have perfect credit they wont let you use it, and once you are denied, they wont let you pay with any other form of payment either...

Reaver, please do the future generation a favor and don't have any kids. You'll screw up raising them, and you'll know exactly how much you've screwed up doing it, but you'll blame how bad they turned out on something else (the US?) anyway and complain about it to everyone.

Seriously, can you be a little more melodramatic? "omg if i get a credit card i'll spend a million dollars and end up in so much debt i'll be fucked for life. omg plz usa sucks!"

I dont want anykids to start with
• I love my Barclaycard. :p

I have a steady income, and the common-sense to control what I buy (mostly online) with it, so being in debt is never an issue for me. I always pay off my bills the day after I get my statement through the post, and it's always at the bank for added piece of mind. (I'm old-fashioned that way.) As a result, I've never had any problems with it. (I've also invested in fraud protection, but never had to employ it.)

For me and my hedonistic lifestyle, a credit card is essential; I wouldn't have been able to buy my Martini Henry, otherwise. However, I use by debit card a LOT more. Like many people here, I prefer to spend what I actually *have* rather than run up a line of credit.

As far as Im concerned Credit cards are a great advantage however they can be an extreme disadvantage if your a compulsive buyer. Since your not using money people tend to spend more without thinking about it I don't think there is anyone I know without some kind of debt cept myself.

The only way Im going to be able to afford that camcorder is through a credit card...Since spending $2000 in one swoop is ridicules & would prevent me from living. So my plan to build credit is to get a PREPAID debit card transfer funds to it & spend away (assuming i get a good job). These thing have many a fee for they're usage but you can rack up points real quick. I have to go this route because of that damn mortgage that was on my credit & all the inquiries that came with it.

Following that I say probably a month after I use the thing I'll start getting credit card offers in the mail. 6 months no interest yay! For me this is perfect because I already know what I plan on spending for the next year.

The credit card company doesn't like that of course they always want a real consumer. :D

Most cards in Norway is "debit", i.e the money is withdrawn when the buy is made. I dont have any credit either, when the account is at 0,- it is at 0 :). Safer that way...never use more than you got.

Experian reported that it was removed yes I don't know fi that applies to the other two agency's. (Transunion, Equifax). Even so the inquires don't dissapear for another oh 6 months so either way its necessary unless I want to wait that long. I can't even get a student credit card probably due to my net income for the year which is probably innaccurate because I haven't stuck to long at any of the latest jobs I've had.

Something else worth considering is getting a credit card with a really low limit. My card has a $NZ500 limit. That way you can't spend too much without paying it off, and it also provides extra protection against fraud - if someone gets the number, they can only charge so much. When you need to spend more, you add money to the card so there's more available.

Exactly. My maximum limit is £600 Sterling, one which I can easily pay-off from my savings. I'd be very hesitant to acquire a card which has a line of credit stretching over say, £1000...

Your credit identity info is what you have for life. Actually it is good to have large credit lines just never use them, morgage lenders and others do look at it. I am getting pre approved for a house and was told this. After Cable guys situation I joined www.identityguard.com . For 13 dollars a month I get 20,000 credit fraud protection and daily checking of my credit info from all 3 agencys. They email me as soon as anyone does anything with my credit. I allready got 3 notifications this past month. People in California for what???? I am on it instantly to check who and why. They even send the phone numbers of people checking! I was surprised how many people can inquire about personal information without your knowledge.

Out of curiosity, what sort of inquiries have you been seeing people try to make (meaning is there any pattern to who is making the inquiries - certain types of companies) or is it individuals who may be trying to scam some money?

They werent scamers .. I think. Chase bank.

Chase morgage lending. Where I never applied too.
They ran a check on all three services. I went to HSBNC and a bank called Washington Mutual. It is strange Chase got my info and ran it. I was a little set off. Also I would think it would come out of there East coast operations not West coast.
