Interesting point of view on terrorism

FreejackFreejack Jake the Not-so-Wise
I’ve always found Newsweek columnist Fareed Zakaria to be fairly insightful and realistic in his views. His latest column this past week is a good example.

I’ve always felt that the real end to Islamic extremist terrorism would have to come from within the Muslim community. The vast majority of Muslim leaders, clerics and followers need to reject the idea killing those with differing ideologies than yourself is unacceptable. It sounds like this is starting to happen and many Arab communities are beginning to recognize their positive influence in this world.

I've never really believed that the "War on Terror" was anything but a load of crap and that it won't work. Terrorism can't be fought with an army.

Fareed Zakaria is very very good. I don't alway agree with him ~ however he is very articulate on the Sunday morning political shows, PBS, and other higher quality TV Magazines and never fails to make a good point. :)

I've seen him on the Daily Show a couple of times, he seems like pretty objective about it all.

    Not islamic terrorism anyway...
although, I have a hunch, that with enough nukes you could possibly wipe out most of the terrorism on this planet.

granted no one would be able to survive, but hey, at least no one has to worry about terrorist! (Just the nuclear winter and roach infestations)

Well, you can, but it would either require (a) a fascist state or (b) the terrorists to be all in one place.

What A# is saying that all countries on all continents would be nuked, in other words to wipe out terrorism is to why out humanity.

A bit of an overstatement, but I think that's what he meant.
  • I wasn't referring to his plan. His plan is brilliance.

Not far off, the hastily mounted horses of the crusader knights could be seen mounting the hillside, as the tardy noblemen raced to squeeze through their own men onto the `frontline' - and it was at this point that one of the knights in front, galloping toward the sea of people, screamed to Arnold Amaury to give his men orders on how to distinguish the Christians from the heretics in the midst of such pandemonium. Amaury yelled back to the knights racing forward around him, "Caedite eos! Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius!" Slay them all! God will know his own!3 Interesting choice of words for the head of the Cistercian order and the highest representative of the Pope - and by the dawn of that same day, every church, home and shed in the town was ablaze; and nearly every one of its estimated 20,000 inhabitants put to the sword.4 In a letter to the Pope, Amaury wrote "the workings of divine vengeance have been wondrous."

    Contact?

Anyway, fighting terrorism is nonsense. You cannot fight terrorism any more than you can fight a flood. We are now paying the price for crimes committed around the world for the past 50 years, and while I by no means condone the murderous actions of terrorists, all this talk of killing all the terrorists is nothing but peurile right wing nonsense. You don't get to aggressively promote your interests abroad with no regard to the people you freely trample and then expect no consequences.

If we cannot recognize that terrorists actions are carried out by people no less human than ourselves— if we cannot acknowledge that every suicide bomber was once a child who dreamed as we have— we have no chance of ever stopping this. To write off terrorism as conveniently monstrous and alien is an unconscionable mistake.
