A great idea.

This would free up alot of area for forests, animals could live normal lives in natural forests again, perhaps..

That kind of structure would be effective and reasonable only in densely populated areas in warmer countries... and of course high winds aren't the only hazard those towers would be up against. Earthquakes and terrorists could cause a great deal of damage.

Yeah this was on a while ago...
Didn't they delay if not cancel the project due to some sort of foundation problem?

Looks like they have thought about wind, those open areas in towers would allow wind blow partially through them.

Biggest problem is weight, I see building it directly above bedrock pretty much as only option.
Also weight of it is such that it would cause considerable stress to bedrock which might actually cause smaller earthquakes when bedrocks settles to balance under that weight. (especially if there's old faults and fractures)

The first thing I thought when I first heard about this was "Woo, sim city arcologies!"

Hehehe...Exactly what I was about to post, Biggles...
• How about megaships?

Don't worry, someone's having a go at those, too. No orbitals yet, though.

You know... if they start building these all junkpiles and everything containing scrap-iron would disappear fast...
Because price of steel would literally explode.
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
Yea, I try to keep myself up to date on Steel prices, and every time a big project starts in China or Japan, Steel prices go up..

So honestly whats the best quality steel?
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
Depends on what you want to create.

For fire kindlers, a high carbon steel (to create sparks). For axes, a steel alloy containing vanadium and manganese (makes it hard and durable). For smithing tools, a steel alloy containing boron (makes it easier to harden the steel once you de-harden (dont know the right word) it. And for patternweldning (damascus steel) several different types of steel, some of which contain nickel.

Then there are also several different types of iron (non-hardenable steel, or vice versa, steel is hardenable iron)..
