missing hard drive space!?

OK, I have a 200gig HD.

I partitioned it to 1 120gig, and 1 80 gig.

That works with the crazy 1000 to 1024 scheme of hard drives to 1 80gig HD and 1 109gig HD.

So, focusing on the 109gig HD...

used: 79gigs
Free: 1.33 gigs
Total Size: 109gigs

W...TF?!?

any ideas folks? And no, that extra 20 gigs is not hidden files, D Drive is used solely for storing, and I have show hidden and system files checked...

I'd suggest running both a scandisk and a defrag on that drive. On occasion, I've had issues where deleting files does not update the table properly, and so I end up with a very questionable lack of space. Running *just* a scandisk does nothing, but once defragmenter runs and completes compacting the files on the drive, it updates the file tables with the proper information and voila! Fixed. Or at least that's what it seems to do. :D

Are you using NTFS? NTFS allocates a certain percentage of disc space (as I recall, anywhere up to 10% of the total partition size) for the master file table. This space is not reported as being available nor used and cannot be used to store normal file data. Once you start filling up either the master file table (by having lots of files) or the data area (by having lots of file data), the one that's becoming full will expand into the space previously allocated to the other. That's where at least some of your space is going, if you're using NTFS.

My guess is system restore space if it is NTFS in XP. start->Control panel->system->System Restore tab. Move your slider left. Of course I would still leave a little.

well, it IS NTFS, but correct me if I'm wrong, but it wouldn't show up as being available correct? So by selecting the drive in my computer it should show it as a 86gig drive, not a 109gig?

, just did a defrag, syschk, and no more space at all.

System restore gave me another 2 gigs though.

this isn't a system drive mind, this is a storage drive. Only thing on it is downloads, games, and music. (And alot of blender stuff)

got me maybe ini files out of control? you might have to defreg inis and delte bad entries...do you have system mechanic?

Wow... that is just plain weird. Massive fragmentation (on a truly epic scale) might do that, but I just don't see it happening.

well, I defragged and did a complete chkdisc, and nothing turned up.

    kinda annoying.

anyhoo...moot point in a couple weeks. Then I'll have my Terabyte drives installed. :) (2x 500gigs in Raid 0)
