i'm really looking forward to this, its going to be a very interesting encounter!
  • Thats sounds like it could be interesting, but I must ask what the point of slamming a ball of copper into an asteroid has? The atricile did not give any indication of what they were looking for or trying to accomplish.

You mean you haven't heard about this mission?

Firstly, it's a comet, not an asteroid.
Secondly, the point is to create a crater on the comet (or possibly break it even more) so that they can then look inside. Comets are thought to be left over from the formation of the solar system, so seeing what has been frozen inside is going to be quite interesting.

Aye, this is one to keep a watch on.
  • Sounds pretty cool.

And no I haven't heard of most of the things NASA has been doing. Don't really keep up on it very much.

Pretty animation from the same guy who did the excellent Mars Rover one:

Not that I'm aware of. You may be thinking of the asteroid-orbiting probe that ended its mission by landing on the asteroid it had been orbiting.
