hey guys!

dunno if any of you noticed my absence over the last 2 weeks, but i've been away in the wilds of scotland on a mapping project for my geology degree. it was so far out in the wilds that they only had 56k internet! oh the horror of it!

but im pleased to report that it was a great trip all round, with lots of fun and drinking and getting to know the folks doing geology and geophysics at edinburgh a little better (more than a bit better in one particular case;)) anyway, i thought i'd post a few pics for you to see what the place was like. definitly one of the most beautiful places ive ever been (when the sun shines anyway, otherwise its bloody miserable!)

(a group decided to go for a swim in the loch, and boy was it cold in there!)

sunset out the back of the lodge

looking out to sea from above Ullapool where we did our main mapping project

looking down on Loch Assynt where we also did some mapping

speaking of mapping.....

another of the brilliant sunsets

one of the mountains near the lodge

some of the scenery in one of the areas we were working in

i've been back for a little over 2 hours now, and already i've hit the bottom of such an emotional downer because the trip and the people on it were just so cool:(
  • Some really interesting landscapes!
    Thank you for introducing. :)

Those steep mountains on the last picture... are *exactly* the kind which would *absolutely* drive me to produce an aerophoto drone... and take pictures from every point around them.

Unfortunately... mountains are quite the annoyance... in the sense that they don't make visits. One has to visit them.

So at some time in future... I really need to find a country where: A) mountains exist and B) local regulations permit flying one of my contraptions.

when we get them back i'll do that, but they're away being marked at the moment so i dont think we'll get them back till the start of next semester. leeds university has done a website on the area due to its historical significance in development of geology. if you click on the top right section of the map in that link, then look at the area along the north east shore of loch assynt then you'll see one of the area's that we mapped (that one took us 4 days i think)

    So did I guess right?

possibly, we didnt go over to that area. the area has been heavily influenced by faulting which may also have caused the formation of those hills by thrusting a section of the stratigraphy up above the surrounding units
